Platinum comp upgrades - do you lose them if cancelling flight?

Had a poke around on the VA site and this one, but cannot find a definitive answer.

If I activate a complimentary Platinum flexi-to-business upgrade, then subsequently cancel the flight, do I lose the upgrade credit?

And as a sub-question, if I 'use' the credit after my anniversary (i.e. book and activate upgrade while platinum, but for a flight when I will have dropped to gold, same question).

Cheers

I have cancelled a comp upgrade twice, and both times i have got the upgrade credit back. Just ask the call centre because you can only cancel through them anyway.

However, was this still withing the epiry period of the comp upgrades.

e.g. My VA WP expired in September last year - some months before that I used two for PER-MEL.

What would happen if I cancelled now?

You would not get them back as they would be 'expired' credits.

I actually got the 'expiry' date wrong and I would know (and would have even with the incorrect expiry date) that I wasn't going to use them for that flight(s), and would probably quickly schedule an alternative if available (like MEL-PER-MEL - my planned usage at the moment is probably MEL-xx_-DRW, xx_ being one of SYD, BNE, ADL - or even PER if I can make that work. :) )

Same here. The call centre reinstated the 2 comp. upgrades on my 2 cancelled flexi flights almost immediately. They were reinstated and visible on next log-in in to my account 5 mins after finishing the cancellation with the call centre. The booked- then cancelled flights and comp. upgrades - were both within the 12 month eligibility period for the comp. upgrades (i.e. the next reassessment date for Plat), Cheers.

What? That they expire after their expiration date?

I know what you're saying and I know what serfty is saying, and I understand both. It would be nice (but programs are programs and we accept them for what they are and make our choices) if one had to cancel a flight that utilised comp upgrades after their validity expired, to have a chance to re-use them, rather than the flight cancellation mean you automatically lose them. The fact that you regain the upgrade credits after cancellation within the validity period is not documented anywhere I can see, so that at least would be nice to have in writing.

But as long as I know the rules (albeit informally), then forewarned is forearmed.
