Platinum charge card downgrade or cancel, what happens to Hotel Gold status?

The Platinum charge card gives gold hotel status as a benefit. What happens to that gold status if we downgrade the Platinum charge card, or cancel it? Does the gold status stay forever, or will be taken away?

You'll eventually be downgraded. Whether that takes one year or five years is the question!

I understand it stays until the end of the hotel year but doesn't renew
