I have an overnight transit in SIN in early December, landing 2140 and departing at 1125 the next day. Does anyone know any comfortable, cheap, and convenient places to stay for the night?

Also: I'm on the AA codeshare CX flight to JFK via HKG - is there an AALounge in SIN or HKG I can use?

Thanks all :)

The transit hotel airside (don't clear immigartion on arrival) is a good option if you don't want to leave the airport. Book early though as they fill up quickly. Ambassador Transit Hotel

Here are some pics I took at the one at T3 2 months ago.

However, you will have plenty of time to check into a hotel downtown if you wish; taxi ride shouldn't be more than 20-25 mins, and are relatively cheap.

SIN airport's transit hotel is supposedly one of the best. Though that makes it very necessary to book long in advance. And you miss seeing the city. Metered taxi should be less than SG$20 each way airport <-> city.

Disclaimer: We book and stay in 2* and 3* hotels. I have no doubts the 5* clan will eventually show up

We have found that Little India is reasonable, as it is the airport side of downtown and taxis in the early a.m. are not a problem (ie 0900 flight to Perth). Liking Indian food would definitely be a plus. Perak Lodge is spotless though the rooms are smallish with doubles now in the SG$150 range with continental breakfast. Albert Court is a bit pricier but the rooms are larger (breakfast is not inexpensive).

I have found that even the cheaper chain hotels are relatively clean but the rooms do get smaller and smaller. Some people do not like the atmosphere of the Geylang area. And the taxi fares are not that much cheaper than Little India. There are a number of backpacker establishments in both areas as well.

The BA/QF lounges in SIN are quite nice. The CX lounge has (way) less frills but a better view and is close to the CX gates. I wouldn't plan on breakfast in either set though the BA/QF lounge does do toast.

CX Lounges in HKG are world class.... Almost worth being OW Emerald.

Happy wandering

Fred

You'd need to be on a flight both marketed and operated by QF/BA/AA to enter the QPs in SIN and HKG. Doesn't hurt asking. Otherwise there are pay per use lounges in both SIN T1 and HKG. Having used the one in SIN however, I'd suggest hanging out in the terminal as a superior option. If you have to be somewhere without lounge access, SIN and HKG are the airports you want to be at.

For that kind of transit time I'd defs recommend forgetting about the transit hotel and heading into town. Plenty of places where you could have a good and cheap feed. Though booze can be expensive... And in the morning check out some Singaporean coffee shops which serve a traditional Singaporean brekkies. :) Mmmm kaya toast.

When you mention 'cheap' what's your budget?

I have heard good things about the Mercure Roxy on the East Coast. Not too far away from the airport. And you have the East Coast Lagoon hawker centre nearby. :)

Not so sure about what's 'good and cheap' downtown... That 1929 place around Chinatown might be ok for a short stay and is in a v nice location with lots of food options nearby. Though a caveat about thin walls...

I actually think the Hotel 81s are Fragrance Hotels are quite OK. In low season they are ~SG$70/night and in high season ~$90/night. I prefer to stay in Geylang, next to Little India, and while the area is a little seedy it has plenty of great places to eat and of course the karaoke bars.

In June I stayed in Hotel 81 - Princess and in a few weeks I am staying at the Fragrance Hotel Joo Chiat. They are only 2 star hotels but clean and good value for money and all I need from the hotel is to dump the bags and then 5-6 hours sleep before the flight out the next day. Why should I throw away ~SG$250 or more to stay in a Holiday Inn or Hilton?

I stayed in Little India at Parkroyal on Kitchener Road in April this year. Clean & friendly etc. Price was reasonable but not tin the leage of Fragrance hotels.

Being located in Little India was great. Right behind the hotel is "Mustafa Centre" , a 24 hour shopping complex that sells everything. Also good foreign exchange rates, better that the airport.

If you only have a short stay, I can recomend it.

QF Webpage states

Member and 1 guest can access lounge on day of departure.+
Guest must be travelling with member.

+next onward flight that day must be on a Qantas, British Airways or Jetstar flight number.

AA flights will only get you in to AA lounges, Not QF ones. To get into a QF lounge it is QF/BA/JQ only.

 I stand corrected.
Just realised that I was looking under the wrong section ("Partner airline lounge access").

Thanks for the tips.
I think heading out of the airport is definitely the way to go for a 14 hour stopover with no lounge access (eek!),
Seedy is fine - just as long as there is some good food! Am looking into some of the Little India hotels.
Appreciate everyone's advice!

I thought about spending the night at the airport but even having access to lounges does not guarantee that I will be allowed entry to the lounge as I am not flying out until 1:30pm the next day. Not worth the risk.

There is great food around and it is cheap. I went out right after I checked into to the hotel to one of the eateries on Geylang Road and had these delicious lamb chops, not easy to get in SE Asia, so I ordered a second serving and the total cost was <S$20 including a large bottle of beer.

In my opinion, Singapore is an exciting stop over which whenever possible, I make. It allows the body to adjust from the rigor of long haul flights from Europe, it makes a handy escape route if doing business in Indonesia and things turn sour and it has some excellent shopping which keeps Mrs! happy, especially the purfume and the custom jewlery manufacturers (she needs a cheaper hobby)...

I have stayed at quite a number of hotels in Singapore, I will relate my fav 2, both centrally located.

Novotel - Clarke Quay

Clarkes Quay is IMHO one of the finer dining experiences available in Singapore. The restaurants (in the forefront of the picture) cater for most tastes and are not overly expensive. Singapore chili crab (you choose the crab) will set you back $40-$50 SIN at any of the seafood resturants, a steak and few beers will set you back the same at Hooters. Hooters alone is worth the visit, I had a young Hooters lass peeling crab and feeding me one night - Mrs! said, "make the most of it, you know I'll never do that!"

To top the night off at the Quay, Ministry of Sound have a night club there - a must do for all - like the music or not, its an experience I frequently partake in...

Across the river is Beerworkz, an on site brewery with reasonably priced beer and good food. (Riverside point)

The MRT is about a 5 minute walk and a taxi from the airport should cost about $20. ( Novotel is the large building in the background)

Robinson Quay Hotel
15 Merbau Road Singapore

This is a more budget minded hotel about 10 minutes walk along the river from Clarke Quay. The rooms (insist on a river view) are small but not too shabby. Mrs! and I stayed at this hotel (used it as a base for overnighters into Indonesia and Malaysia) for 10 nights and the only complaint was the Singapore Slings were so darn good!

There's a small bar on the rivers edge and honestly, they do make the best slings in Singapore there...

Just over the road is Robinson walk where you will find good bars and eateries at half the cost of Clarke Quay. A fav here is the buckets of beer - 4 or 5 beers in an ice bucket at a reasonable price. Just outside the walk is a Portguese resturant where the owner (Vin Diesel lookalike) has found some loophole and is able to serve bottled beer (heineken and tiger) at about $4 a bottle if you sit on the street side of the bar! The food here is also awesome, the skewered roasts, the food keeps coming till you say stop.

Novotel is good, expect a walk in rate of $200 or so, advise pre booking from Australia, you can get better rates, I think my last rate was about $180 through Qantas holidays (!) - Mr! scale - 8/10 :):)

Robinson Quay - you will need to prebook. You can negotiate a good rate here, our Xmas bookings were less than $125 per night including breakfast. Mr! scale 6/10 :)

Hope this helps!! :)

Some great info there Mr! and will take note of that for my shopping trip in December with the folks.

Hooters sounds like a good night out with the old man
