Pilot's profane tirade about cabin crew caught on tape

I get the "gays and grannies" bit, but wth is a "grande"?

Presumably in reference to the ridiculous Starbucks beverage size of the same name ... I'd say they mean a "person of size".

Funny rant, made funnier that it ended up on ATC .. :D

I actually heard this on the news yesterday, couldn't work out if it was relaed to the almost collision at JFK or not, but heard a snippet and thought it was hilarious.

I've always thought what if... you know, the whole plane hears an announcement because the mic got stuck. And now I sort of know. Might have been far worse had the pax and his fellow crew heard that rant though.

A grandee was an ancient title for a nobleman.
more recently often used as a term signifying someone who has been around for a long time and has influence-eg Bob Hawke is a grandee of the ALP.
Of course some use it more as a term for someone who has outlived their usefulness as in bob Hawke is.......
I think this last usage is what the pilot was referring to.

The pilot isn't the first and won't be the last to get something they said broadcast around the world, I guess you should always use the line, never say something that might get repeated or that you don't want your mum to hear.

Some aircraft have a nasty habit of sending discussions to where they shouldn't... Make a PA in the AB, and for some time afterwards, anything that is said in the coughpit may be put out over the PA, even if all the switches are correctly set so that it shouldn't.

While not appropriate for the corporate environment, I do believe that many people in life have similar conversations. Some in a corporate guise, some with their mates on a weekend etc.

Both men and women can have similar conversations. This is not exclusive to pilots...

Hilarious.

Not quite the same but one of the reasons I hardly ever use email at work is the contents of the email have come back to bite me more than once.

Southwest Flight Attendants: It's not just the Pilot.

A little more information from another perspective.

Southwest Flight Attendants: It's not just the Pilot.

By now I'm assuming everyone has heard about the homophobic, misogynistic rant by a Southwest pilot that he accidentally broadcast his tirade to air traffic controllers on March 25. If not, read about it hereand listen to it here. Personally, I think a person like this is probably beyond short-term rehabilitation--his attitude sounds pretty ingrained. But Southwest decided to reinstate him after a suspension (of unspecified length), some diversity training and an apology to the FAA controllers. The airline put out a statement and an apologetic video from its vp-flight operations after the rant became public and went viral.

You may also have read by now that the union for Southwest's flight attendants, TWU Local 556, in which union local President Thom McDaniel says the attendants are "dismayed by the response from Southwest Airlines' management" and is considering filing a complaint with the federal government's Equal Opportunity Employment Commission (EEOC). "We hope not to have to go that route, and instead we are counting on Southwest Airlines to remedy this injustice."

I was interested to read the remainder of the above article and then the comments, one of which stated:

... I've been on many a flight in which (in conversation) flight attendants have openly criticized pilots, other flight attendants, and even worse - passengers on their flights...
...The pilot has issues and exercised poor judgment, but does not deserve to lose his job. TWU Local 556 (and Horwitz) should be careful of what it wishes for...what comes around goes around.

Whether the nature and extent of the disciplinary action was balanced, or otherwise, I guess it's true that you should ensure your own house is in order first, and that you are prepared to be scrutinised. This shouldn't prevent opinion or commentary on matters of intolerance and bigotry, but you should be prepared for your opinion to be questioned.
