Photography and Cameras

Looking at these again, I just thought that it's not focus as such but perhaps the zoom is too great for the quality of the lens and the loss of definition at max zoom where the image becomes somewhat soft and lacks clear precise focus.
Doubt it, it is a Leica lens.'
Assessment yesterday. Went fine but wasnt expecting the detailed critique on the photos. The two examiners suggested I should look at a design course as that's where the photos I am taking are heading. They loved the Haystack photo and one said they had a flash of the Indigenous Flag in it which I'd not thought of. The fast shutter (1/2500) went down well and the other examiner said that she could see an Aloe Vera leaf in the water capture. They also were very keen on the photo I described as manky but they liked it as it was creative. See where I am heading here? They are not into the science of photography so much as the design of the final product so they like photos that are cropped differently to how other photographers might do this. It is a school of Creative photography not just - photography. They went nutso over the student's diary which to us older adults looked like something we would do as a teenager working on a scrapbook - stickers and the like. After the assessment a few of us were talking and one girl in particular who takes beautiful child portraits was rather disappointed in her feedback as it was a bit meh. We both thought this may have been a function of ensuring the younger person continued and the examiner's keen emphasis on creativity of photos rather than technique, It was also a bit interesting hearing 'the story' behind the beer bottle which was a photo of, a beer bottle.

What's the actual lens?

Remember everyone gets a prize these days.:)

Ah, that would be 24x optical zoom LEICA DC lens with full range F2.8 aperture.

Nope, I am currently not getting a prize ;)
Aww... I'm sure one day you will! :D

And just because it has a Leica name doesn't mean that at max zoom the quality is absolute. One review I found of Leica DC Lenses said "But at longer focal lengths and ISOs of 800 and above, things began to get softer as the camera's noise suppression efforts often blurred and smudged the details. "

I suggest that's what you are seeing in these images.

The weird thing is that it’s a couple of years old and only discovered it a few weeks ago when sorting all my pictures. Never knew of it until then. Good old point and shoot camera.
Goes to show the photographer maketh the photo.

Good old point and shoot camera.

Explains the softness of the foreground subjects, you would have been even happier if you had some depth of field to play with.
Still a very good pic ; many very good pics appearing off phones these days where the lack of sharpness is trumped by the composition

May I suggest that’s a bit pedantic? Especially from a reduced sized, commercial image. Good photo.

Have now won 10 of these awards and have sold two photos. It was a commercial sale so am interested to see if I find it online anywhere. I’m not wealthy yet.
This is the latest. It’s a screenshot so it isn’t the actual jpg so quality not there.

Just been outside to photograph the total lunar eclipse we are having (or at least the progression into it :)).
Not the best results with Sony HX90; will post some pics tomorrow (and of course a bloody big black cloud came across half way through ).

HX90V on auto settings not suited to this type of imaging, especially the initial ones where the brightness of the uneclipsed moon washed out the sharp 'terminator' line that was there. No tripod, just a steady balcony rail.

I’d be happy with that. Adelaide - full cloud cover and I’d even planned to go to Mt Lofty to snap it. Today - bright and sunny. Sigh.

Yeah, not back for a pocket camera I guess. Actually, the images were a bit better - when I de-resolved them for posting, I got that 'fuzzy' texture you see in the last one especially.
