Perth man fined $58000 for causing VA to divert his flight

Have heard of flights where similar has happened and passengers assisted in arresting offending passenger while midair.
Ive always wondered what I would do if it flight attendants put out general call for assistance in controlling a violent/aggressive passenger.

First mover?
See who else volunteers?
second/subsequent mover because generally the first mover will get hit the most?

I have been on a flight and encountered an aggressive passenger. Into the coughtail of alcohol, recreational drugs, factors such as lower oxygen levels at altitude, dehydration, sleep deprivation when thrown into the mix can worsen the behaviour of the passenger. However, these are not mitigating factors in my opinion, just as a wet road does not necessarily mitigate a driver's responsibility to control the car.

To me this is an example of how crazy the curfew is.
Why wouldn't this qualify for an exemption. If I was on that plane I would be furious if I had to spend the night in Perth and miss a days work

I have to agree, as far as I'm concerned the curfew should be limited to scheduling only. As far as I'm concerned provided that the airline has not deliberately scheduled flights which would always run late eg a 10:00pm arrival which always got in at midnight due to very predictable factors, but if a flight has a geniune delay, it should still be allowed to take-off / land during curfew hours.

It's not like the people who live near SYD airport woke up one morning and saw that an airport had been built overnight, those people chose to move into an area with an existing airport, and would have surely had the knowledge that the airport was a loud thing.

I agree, but the simple answer to that is that they also had the knowledge that there was a curfew, with certain (pretty restrictive) rules :(

So should flight not plan to arrive in SYD after 6pm in case there is a disruptive pax on board? Should VA have just continued with a pax on board which everyone would rather not have on the plane?
I can almost understand residents getting upset if 5 747's where scheduled to land and then take off at 3am each night. But a single plane, which is unintentionally delayed (not by the airline) should not be forced to avoid flying to SYD because an arbitrary line in the sand had been drawn.

If I was on the same flight, you would see me as a blur heading for the bad guy. Post 9-11 there is no room for hesitation. :)

I would contribute by sitting on the offender, if that was helpful in the circumstances.

That is an extremely good way to deal with someone. With three or four volunteers doing that the problem is over :)

Extremely well written. A voice of reason and common sense. If only our politicians could be like this :)

And they also knew there was a curfew in place.

Also compare flight movements in 1974 to today. Not quite the same. Shame they didn't have a crystal ball.

Correct.

There are more movements now, however each causes infinitely less noise than those of 1974.

Did they really need a crystal ball? I suspect not.
