Friends

I do not wish to get whacked for roaming so I will plan to use Viber / Skype whenever possible.

What do you recommend for a personal WiFi for a short HKG jaunt ?

Last month I used this device in Japan - highly recommended.

Is handy.travel the best option for HKG ?

Should I be looking for a prepaid iphone SIM with inbuilt data option ?

Appreciate any advice.

Thanks

Cheers

Thanks

Is this useful for $HK69 ?

Seems cheaper than one2free: 1.5Gb ($69) vs 1Gb ($88)

Free wifi is all over the place in HK. I didn't bother with a local sim... If you can't find a free wifi in the place you are currently standing, walk 50 meters down the road and you'll quickly find a free wifi.

I used it for skype and facebook with no problems at all...

I now use my own unlocked Huawei E5372T ($99 and can can unlock for $10 - see Whirlpool) with a local SIM.

I know it's LTE capable, but on 3G the battery life is incredible as it's got the largest battery I've ever seen in a pocket wifi.

It supports all major 3G networks globally.

You could think about the "Discover Hong Kong Tourist SIM Card" - HK$69 for 5 days!

Sorry, but I am rather dim on tech matters.

It is a personal WiFi device but then you would require a local account to get on the net, right ?

The "local SIM" would then cost extra on top of the device which you could re-use ?

Why then don't I use that local SIm in my iPhone directly ?

Thanks for explaining.

An unlocked WiFi modem does not require a local account to work aside from a SIM, using your phone may be problematic for surfing with other devices if tethering is blocked by providers which does happen, an example being Woolworths mobile locally in Australia, where only a WIFI device works when it comes to sharing.

Thanks

So any prepaid SIM with preloaded data could be used with this device and multiple-device access is a given.

Got it !

Just an update

For my long weekend in HK, I did not buy any SIM, relying on free WIFI which is just about everywhere.

True, there was some (bearable) inconvenience walking on the street.

Hotel had free wifi so that was all good

Good to know. I will give it a go in early April.
