WA's tourism industry is set to receive a major increase thanks to new daily direct flights between Jakarta and Perth, announced today by Garuda Indonesia, Tourism Minister Kim Hames said. The direct flights are due to start on June 28 this year.

“With more than 10 million people, Jakarta is the most populous city in South East Asia and re-establishing a direct service to Perth is a big vote of confidence in Western Australia as a holiday and business destination,” Tourism Minister Dr Kim Hames said.

And Perth gets more 1-stop options to Asia. Seems to be an interesting turn-around story from Garuda. Would have been cooler if they were in Star Alliance rather than SkyTeam but at least its another option.

QF barely service SYD-CGK properly. They desperately need a massive number of 787-9s to do SYD-CGK, PER-CGK, PER-HKG, PER-SIN, SYD-HKG, MEL-HKG, MEL-BKK and PER-BKK properly just for starters. They should also look at PER-PVG and a return of PER-NRT and SYD-PEK. KUL on QF metal would be nice too.

You make a good point - QF can barely even adequetly service the biggest most populous, high growth nation next door to us from their own Sydney hub.

I will believe that when I see it. What you are actually saying is that they need a modern fleet and a plan for Asia.

Given the timing of the current JQ flights PER-CGK I don't think Garuda will face too much competition to make this route a success. Having flown them a few times recently within Indonesia they have a pretty competitive product with their refreshed fleet.

Excellent timing, as they say, the way to get over one person is to get under another.. perhaps the same is true with airlines? Since I'm still grieving the loss of QFi in Perth, perhaps a good way to get over it is by getting on Garuda to snap up some cheap CX fares out of CGK.
Every cloud has a silver lining..
