Before I go and hassle my travel agent... what would be the best routing on a one world airline to go from PER-DEN arriving in DEN on (or around) July 8, and flying back to PER July 14/15. Price will be important.

Edit: if flying discount economy.. this wouldn't be enough to complete an AA challenge would it? Or does it not matter if you're disc. econ vs D/J class?

Best is very subjective. Are you looking for:
  • lowest cost
  • fastest flight time
  • most comfortable
  • maximum FF earning
What class of travel?

Lowest cost with good FF earning (ie. if I can complete the AA Plat challenge I will...), otherwise I'm currently a QP PS, with 350 SC to go (so wouldn't make it to SG on this trip anyway..).

Best being price?... tough to beat $3500 with QF Y… we on the east coast can often risk great connections via HNL, but by the time you take a QF transcon, better to stay the distance with them. (You guys really need some better competition out of Perth, before prices will drop!)

Perhaps, given that pricing [$3500], if status chasing is relevant – the good ol’ xONE4!

(NM, in a post many months ago, convinced me of the 2xpoints QFF value of WP, or if you have time in the US, bounce across the states on a challenge!)

I had considered a LONE4.. now to just work out routing, and what it will cost

LONE4 is not going to be a low-cost option.

For cheapest option with good QF FF points earning, try JQ to HNL and then a YUP/KUP fare on AA to DEN.

For cheapest OneWorld option look for the QF/AA deal via NRT. But its not great for either AA or QF FF earning.

You could easily complete the AA Plat challenge by booking the AA codeshare on QF trans-Pacific flight and connecting with AA flights to DEN via DFW.

Ok... but how would I do that from PER, and what would it cost? I'm getting very confused

Let's see:

PER-SYD $540 return (MEL $530).

SYD/MEL-HNL ~$1800 return.

HNL-LAX-DEN & return USD1860 on a YUP (480 QF SC's, 10,215 AA qpoints)
HNL-LAX-DFW-DEN & return USD1860 on a YUP (720 QF QC's, 13,305 AA Qpoints)

Do the same routes in WHY (O class) for USD825 for 0 QFF SC's and 3405/4435 AA qpoints.

(Note that it's almost peak season Mid June-Mid Jul, depart on 18th July and your Oz-HNL fare is $400 less.)

Would the SYD-HNL be *C?

Edit: for $1800, looks like JetFlex.

Looking harder, it's quite difficult to get that fare around your dates;

Them problem is main with the return; QF4 (HNL-SYD) is showing Y0 (sold out in WHY) on 13th July; and down to the more expensive fares (K9) on 11th and 15th.

The least expensive fares your dates are coming in at 2.1-2.3K and involve a JQ codeshare segment.

If you return a week later (~20th) you can get the $1800 fares; depart two weeks later (~18th) and you see the $1300 fares.

Yep, these fares are generally far cheaper than any other oneworld option. My sister is flying QF/NW PER-NRT-SFO in October for about $1820 inc tax (similar in price to the AA option for her departure dates, but heaps more availability).

Unfortunately the AA availability seems very limited - there is no availability on these fares (Q class) around the dates mentioned by the OP. I think it also involves spending all day in Tokyo on the way over.

Its normally an overnight stop in NRT on the USA-bound direction.

Was going to go over for a conference.. so dates can't really change much.

Might have to give it a miss this year...

Another option is using FF points. Good value considering high season airfares, 128,000 FF points + taxes PER-DEN return or 96,000 FF points + taxes SYD-DEN return, assuming you have the FF points.

Not sure about availability but I was able to get award seats for early August 2 weeks ago.

For an extra 12 000 I could get a RTW couldn't I?

Which is what I booked!

Watch out for taxes on a RTW though. Mine cost $935 for the maximum 16 sectors!

Thanks for reminding me once again why I no longer credit flights to QF FF.

One might get lucky with an award redemption but given that simple trans pac return fares are quite high, award availability is almost certain to be scarce (Non Existent on QF4)
