Paying to upgrade - Econ to Bus.

We were quoted CDN300 to upgrade my daughter from Y to J on BA flying from YYZ to LHR in 2005. My husband & I were on a OW RTW and picked her up from an exchange program. We begged and they comped her.

In regards to Emirates, I was offered to upgrade my Y class MEL-DXB (nonstop A345 flight) to Business for 920 AUD. Received offer by e-mail 2 or 3 days before the actual flight was due. Seems they send out those offers according to actual booking situation to collect some money from pax willing to pay for the service, before they have to give out free op-ups at check-in.

Do you know if they do sometimes give out cheaper ups at check-in - or is this just an urban airport legend.

I'm flying MEL-LDN via DXB in two legs with a 3 hour leg stretcher - it is worth some money to me to upgrade - not 920 tho

Doing some rough calculations it looks like you would be up for around AUD$3,800 if you were successful in getting all 4 segments upgraded on a SYD/MEL/BNE-LHR return fare. Add your $2,000 economy ticket on top of that and you're at $5,800.

Thai offers J class tickets to London for around $7,300 normally, so paying on check-in will save you about 20% off a pre-purchased business class fare.

For some people this will be a bargain, for others the uncertainty of the upgrade might outweigh the potential saving!

My partner and self were on the first leg of a Star Alliance RTW Mixed Class Business/First trip at the end of last year. It was Boxing Day Dec 26 and had transferred from a QF flight BNE-SYD with our bags checked-in at BNE through to FRA. We were to fly the A346 TG458 in J then LH in F to BKK-FRA. I enquired about paying for an upgrade to First at the SYD Thai check-in counter, having no idea at the time such a thing was possible. I almost couldn't contain my elation when told "YES" for an extra AUD$750 each!! A bargain I thought, let's do it!

Then the.... But I will need to check with the Gate/Flight Controller to see if it isn't too late due catering etc already organized.

Then the emotional deflation when we got the "too late" decision and stayed in J. We were at Check-in about 90mins before departure, so a tip to all is to arrive EARLY when requesting a paid upgrade. We had flown F with Thai the previous year SYD-BKK and relished in downing the pre-flight Dom Pérignon, and this time seated in the first J row 11A/B and witness 1K being poured the bubbly French stuff :( was a trifle depressing - dreaming of what might have been...

Any experience in upgrading Cathay flights in Hong Kong or Rome? We're booked Y on QF codeshare from Hong Kong to Rome return in May?

thanks for that

You do know that you can buy quite a bit of Dom Pérignon for $750?

:)

I don't have exact details, but my 2 friends were offered an upgrade at check-in from Y to J for $200 each from SYD-BKK with Emirates earlier this month - Amazing value:D.

Just wondering if anyone has obtained an upgrade on a LAN flight, SYD - SCL and vice versa ??

Nooooo! Please say it ain't so. I was sure the only reason airlines charged so much for premium seats was the cost of Dom Pérignon.

Anyone received full status credits, points and cabin bonus on a departure upgrade?
As in no points or any fee paid...

Is this the norm?
Happened to me not too long ago...on a very long flight.
