Pay Points to Extend Qantas Status

Missed out on three tours / flights/ accommodation due to spinal operation during start of 2025 which would have extended my Q Platinum membership; cancellation refunds will pay for tours of Morocco, Italy, Austria and Romania . Sadly none will accrue within my membership year. Spent 260000 QFF points on a glorious 7 days in Trieste in late 2024, so will not be receiving an offer. Back to building SC and points

I suggest contacting Qf and explaining that you could not travel for medical reasons and they may be nice.

Anyone got a recent data point on this ? I am on 985 and about to drop from WP, 1035 if I add the green tier points. I’ve been plat since 2015 and wouldn’t actually be all that bothered if last year’s travel patterns had persisted, especially as I’m 150 away from LTG. Only now I probably have 4 or 5 trips to Japan in the next year and plat is something I value for the lounge and the airport experience in Tokyo. Points just pile up and I’m almost never able to spend them. Even if it’s more than 120k I’d probably do it.

When should I call to request a status extension? Should I redeem the 50 from green tier or hold them for a bump next year?

I got the offer to retain via email, about 2 weeks before the membership end. 730SC, was 13 months ago. I probably also have 10 years of WP. Based on that:
1. I would keep the 50SC green tier for the new year (assuming you hope to achieve WP next year)
2. I would call 10 days prior membership renewal.

Now, you may consider using your green tier this year, and do a status run. 115 SC is not that much, and there is strong evidence of a DSC starting in the coming days. That way, with your planned trips to Japan, you may reach 600 SC or more for next year, which theoretically put you in a position to get the paid extension offer, for another WP year.

I think my post from October is the most recent report. I waited to ensure no comp before requesting it into my new membership year.

Agree with @ChrisMars though, you're pretty close and may want to use the offer in the future (we assume they only allow it once).

Another way of looking at it is the 120k points could be valued at maybe $1200 minimum. For 115sc that's $10/sc which is way higher than many status runs, especially during DSC promos.

If you were looking at 600sc for $1200 it's a better value proposition, again depending on your value for a qf point.

Have you triggered Loyalty bonus already? Just a few SC may nudge you another 50 towards the end goal.

So far from any loyalty bonus, more flying on MH and JL than QF in the last year.

Painless process, very quick and easy call handled quickly, efficiently and correctly. Can ask for anything more really. Now have to ask if the new changes to QFF will prevent me from jumping ship to JMB. One more year of WP was meant to be a bridge to JGC.

I was about 500 short and was offered 120k when asked.
From everything I've seen it's the same offer no matter the shortfall.

Ah OK. I think that I have worked out how to get over the line by April 30 with 7 SC's to spare - took a fair bit of wrangling on a spreadsheet.

I'm holding off needing this also for April 30 so booked a fare to Melbourne from ADL with current DSC. Will need the points request for April 30 2027.

I tried this on yesterday and was told strictly no for P1 - only WP and SG.

Hypothetically you'd have to expect at least 360k points, probably more. Doubt that would be worth it.

Will it be scraped? Will it remain?

My guess is QF will want to retain it, even as a 'secret,' non-advertised, ad hoc tool, so they can relieve you of a bunch of points and, as has been mentioned before, status doesn't cost them much if you're not flying.

Hopefully retain given that the freebie WP year(s) are only available to LTG and then for those with 25k SCs and up.

I suspect the pay to retain could stay also - for a similar argument?

In case anyone's playing along at home and had the same question, I was not allowed to pay points for a second year, after reaching just under 800 of 1200 SCs for WP.

The agent I spoke to focused on words like one-time only, limited time offer, and something which suggested it was a kindness on Qantas' part despite the fact it costed me 120k points.

So no signal that the offer has been discontinued but that could still change come December.

Another data point - no email 10 days out from not retaining SG (150 SC short, and lots of DSC and Green Tier to even get that close). Dropped from WP the year before. Have lots of flying, including US domestic before hitting the regain, so worth it to retain status. Called up, put on hold, and given the 80,000 to retain offer. Warning that it was a once off. (The other consideration in the value here is that failing to retain would reactivate QP membership and run it down, but by retaining, should end up hitting LTSG before dropping again, so can convert what doesn't get run down back into a refund eventually, so some eventual $ return for the points as well - plus no better ancticipated use for the points in the near term).
