The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's passports.gov.au website has remained offline since Tuesday, reportedly due to a "critical hardware failure" that sent its web server offline.

The outage was initially attributed on Tuesday by DFAT's Twitter feed to "technical difficulties".
Later, on Friday, DFAT told technology news website iTnewsthat the downtime related to a "critical hardware failure" and that its website was likely to remain offline over the weekend.

It told iTnews its service delivery providers were working around the clock to resolve the issue.

Here's hoping that immediate requirements can be dealt with in house.

Wonder if hackers have targetted it or if it was designer error?
