Not sure on the USA regulation and homeland security's adherence , however I do know you can get you passport renewed in 24 hours if you need to,
Problem with US is it damn near impossible to get to speak to anyone to check.
Play it safe and speak to your passport office and see how quick you can get it redone
 
Sounds like you have an answer.I read this as I was about to depart DFW for NRT.Got the Aangel on the way out and the official word is for Aussie passports it only has to be valid for the duration of your stay in the USA.No 6 month validity required.

Thanks everyone for your input, and especially to Drron, who had gone out of his way to help. In the meantime, I have actually also got in touch with US Custom & Border Protection and their official reply was same - "All Australian passports are exempt from the six month rule. They only have to be valid at the time of departure from the US"
