While New Zelanders can travel to Australia without a visa, they cannot enter without a valid visa.

Well, yes and no. The DIPB website states: "On arrival in Australia, most New Zealand citizens who do not hold another visa and present a valid New Zealand passport are granted a Special Category Visa (subclass 444) (SCV). Grant of an SCV is also subject to the applicant meeting health and character requirements. The SCV is a temporary visa that allows the holder to remain and work in Australia indefinitely as long as the holder remains a New Zealand citizen."

exactly - they can travel here without a visa (ie they will be allowed to board their aircraft), but they cannot enter (cross the border) unless they are granted a SCV.

I guess the numbers refer to "visa free for tourism". Most countries require visa for almost all other purposes.

The venerable black passport with silver fern motif also grants entry to Brazil sans visa, which the Australian one does not..

Twenty odd years ago I was flying from Cairo to Nairobi with some Kiwis who were ribbing me about needing a visa for Kenya. I had a laugh when they got pulled aside at immigration though! They were granted theirs on landing but apparently back then I couldn't enter without a visa.

And NZ passport holders are allowed to stay in the EU much longer. Glad I also have one of the #1 passports.
