Firstly I'd just like to thank the community here for the great content that gets posted, I've learnt so much from reading both this site and the Flyertalk forums over the past few months :)

To give you some background I signed up for the Frequent Flyer program in January, I am currently gold and am on my way through platinum to Partner Gold before the end of the year (I travel consistently every week and made a spreadsheet to validate that my flights will get me there).

Now my Girlfriend has no real use for Partner Gold given she travels with me or flys business if she goes by herself though my parents who are now retired and travel internationally two or three times a year could really benefit from having a Gold FF Membership.

So my question is - Has anyone been successful in convincing Qantas to give their Partner Goal to a relative? or been successful in saying that their relative is their Partner?

If the latter question is inappropriate please let me know and I'll remove it from my post.

Thanks in Advance!

- Danny

Welcome to AFF.

If you’re considering giving your partner gold to a relative, I’d be careful what information you post about yourself, but don’t see a reason why you couldn’t. I’m not sure if it’s the same as Partner-QP, where you need to reside at the same address, if that’s the case, you may have to adjust your parents’ home address to your address and change their work/mailing address to their actual address, because if things don’t match it may raise flags.

I know if I ever got to PG I’d be giving my PG membership to my mum, if I didn’t have a partner.

I would also say that you can do it, but you need to be very careful to make sure that you meet the terms and conditions of the FF program. I've just had a quick look and the T&C don't have a lot of detail on partner gold, so the starting point is the definition of partner:

'Partner' means a Member's spouse or domestic partner who resides at the same address as the Member;
So you parent would have to reside with you and also be a domestic partner. Now the argument centers on what is a domestic partner. You need to decide this for yourself. Some people would say that it is someone with who you are in an intimate relationship. I don't agree, I think it is someone that you have a share domestic situation with; so a flat mate with split bills and separate meal arrangements is not a domestic partner IMO. But someone that you live with, who shares the planning and running of the household with you, IMO would be a domestic partner, regardless of intimacy between the 2 people.

First point is the Qantas terms and conditions here: Frequent Flyer - About the Program - Terms & Conditions

Then I would suggest trying to find some broad legal type definitions on a domestic situation and domestic partner. Then form you own opinion about if you meet the requirements of the Terms and conditions.

Good Idea and I'll make sure not to post any more details about me, that's what I would think is the best way to do it too (not that I would) - Just change their Qantas address and I can forward any Qantas mail onto them...

It’d be nice if you could stick around though ;) even if we don’t hear any more details about you :p

My Partner Gold partner's Gold status (I hope that's not too much of a mouthful) lapsed on 30 November. Nothing came in the mail from the QF in the lead-up to the expiry or in December. A week ago my partner was very surprised that she not only got a soft landing to Silver (having flown two JQ sectors and earned maybe 60 SCs for the year) but was also given a free Qantas Club membership. I'm blown away, not the least because it's another slap in the face to WPs who've been told anytime access is being removed due to lounge overcrowding.

Anyway, today my partner gets an email from Qantas saying "Your Qantas Club Partner membership+ is due for renewal next month".

My partner never had a Qantas Club Partner membership.

All seems strange to me.

Ring and ask them? If you want it you can get it at a decent rate. I paid $275 for memory.

I think they are offering you an advantage if you want QC membership, otherwise membership Is more expensive if not on the partner rate?

Does that make sense?

QF Gold gives you Qantas Club membership so your partner did have it. I believe they give you a couple of months of membership as an opportunity to renew for $$$ without paying the joining fee when dropping from Gold to Silver.

Yes thats true however the soft landing is not guaranteed and I believe not possible unless you have done the 4 sectors?

Okay. I think I've worked it out. Thank you all. It would seem that Qantas call Partner Gold "Qantas Club Partner membership" for the Qantas Club side of things. I've just logged into her account and, as suggested, she appears to have been comped three months of Qantas Club membership. The email received today is about renewing at the cheaper rate. I was all confused because she's never had Qantas Club membership (apart from its inclusion in PG).

Definitely lucky, especially considering she was only Gold courtesy of PG. Her account is showing she met the minimum number of sectors courtesy of some BA codeshares.

Apologies if I've caused any confusion.

One last question: rather than renewing at the (very) cheap $275 Partner rate I'm going to give her Partner Gold again. My year expires 30 November. If I give it her now, will this give her PG to 30 November 2012? I assume the answer is yes given I have already requalified for WP and this will take me through until 30 November 2012.

Correct, PG aligns with the WP's status and year.

I has thought that you could gift Gold membership to any relative or friend and was not dependent on being at the same address. I hit Partner Gold later this month and was going to gift to one of my clients (who has paid for most of my Qantas travel). My wife doesn't need it as she flies with me.

This is based on several things. First what is stated in my FF summary:

Additional Status credits required by 31 Mar 2011 to receive complimentary Gold membership for a family member or friend:

This is also replicated in the terms on the website saying (sorry cant post links being a newbie :-()

Complimentary Gold membership for a family member or friend when you reach 2,100 Status credits
Reach 2,100 Status credits^^ in one membership year and, until 3 May 2011, you'll receive complimentary Gold membership for any family member or friend.

Again so I see no reference to being at the same address.

So I called Qantas Platinum desk and they said that as far as she knew they didn't have to be at the same address. Guess I will find out in a couple of weeks.....

The change to being able to gift it to a friend came in late last year, until that happened there was an occasional discussion about who a partner was etc here and need to be at the same address but its redundant now.

As already noted, the requirements for Partmer Gold changed in Nov?Dec last year - so you can now "gift" a mate or friend, in addition to your partner etc.

I gave mine (reached 5 days short of my year-end recalc date) to my Mum, as my partner tends to travel with me - guess lots of folks are in the same situation.:)
