So I was researching some flight options to Europe via the Middle East and noticed that QR airways, e.g. from DOH-LHR, earns 15SCs for economy, 30 for Flex, and 30 for J, but 60 for F. This is out of keeping with the usual rule of economy =x, flex = 2x, J = 4x & F = 6F (and makes it a complete PITA for me to automate). Whatsmore, the Qantas earn table for partner airlines says nothing of this, with QR having the same rules as any other airline, specifically with booking classes CDIJR earning at Business rates, and it's not on every flight with QR for example HKG-DOH is at the normal earn rate.

This is also different from the MH earnings which restricts Aus/EU airports to capping SC earn at Flex Economy (which is also documented in the earnings table).

Has anyone else come across this sort of thing, or have any idea what's going on?

I would go with what the tables say. The Earnings calculator is littered with errors.

does anybody have first hand experience with earning SCs on QR, they have some amazing J class fares but I'm reluctant to book them because of the 60SCs from SYD to DOH according to the calculator

Yes, I have quite a bit of experience with QR, flying J and crediting to QF. You certainly have to be very careful with the routes you pick for SC earning potential.

For example, CAI-DOH-BKK return in J (F from/to CAI) earns 500 SC. CAI-DOH-ADL in the same class earns 480 SC but is much further and more expensive. Doesn't really seem to make sense, but perhaps anything that could remotely be seen to be in competition with a Qantas route (eg ex-DXB) is heavily marked down.

I wouldn't compare MH earn to anything given the very special conditions on the oz-kul/oz-europe routes for MH (basically to induce you to NOT fly them for QFF earning purposes)

Here you go - 60 SC's DOH-LHR:

QR 003 BUSINESS 25JAN16 DOHA/LONDON
3,0003,00060

Careful with cheap Economy; I just had 3 fares with no earn because W booking class is zero. :(

Thanks all, I think I will steer clear this time around but if anyone does fly DOH-LHR in J I would be interested to hear what the posted SC earn is!

The days of QFF being 'carrier neutral' are long gone. Partner services that compete with QF/EK services are severely dealt with. The link below has all the details that you are looking for and you will find the old rules do not apply anymore.

Go with the best J deal regardless of the SC earn. Why pay (possibly) thousands of dollars more for a possibly lower quality of product (EK 77W for example) just for a few more QF SC.

Hate to admit it but I will actually be flying in economy, at least one way - couldn't justify the business class cost this time around even at the cheapest fares. I was hoping to take advantage of BAs current IST-LHR offer of ~A$480 return, but couldn't get to IST for less than the cost to get to LHR, from AUS, so that fell flat on its face.

Errr - look at my post 2 posts up!!! 60 SC's.

Sorry, I misread your post as being DOH-SYD, no idea why! Thanks, that ties in with the table (but not the calculator - one more for the inaccuracies list).
