Hi Guys,

I'm flying from HKG to SYD during the peak CNY period.

Thought I would get a better chance if I asked my cousin to put the request in for the upgrade from PE (T class) to business class.

However, when he called the P1 team- they said that there was an issue as my PE ticket was a sale fare, they couldn't do or request upgrDE.

Is there something I'm missing? Any help/advice rendered will be much appreciated.

Very odd, for all I know all Y+ fares are upgradable. I successfully upgraded from "T" bucket in the past.
Might be a case of HUCA (Hang Up and Call again). Also, if you give your cousin your booking reference he should be able to apply for your upgrade online.
Just make sure you cancel your upgrade request if you had already applied from your own account.

just out of interest, what priority is applied to an upgrade requested by a P1 for a passenger who might not hold that status in their own right?

For example, P1 requesting for a bronze, does that trump a gold?

IIRC, same priority as if they were P1 themselves.

From QF website:

"If you are not travelling but use your points to request an upgrade for an eligible family member, the upgrade will be awarded according to the eligible family member's priority, not the status of the Qantas Frequent Flyer whose points are being used. An exception is made when Platinum One members, though not travelling, redeem points for an upgrade on behalf of eligible family members. In this case the eligible family members will enjoy the same high priority as a Platinum One member."

thanks... although fundamentally that seems wrong as a concept.

I can understand if the benefit applied to 'immediate family' (parents, partner or kids), but if for example a far distant cousin (no offence OP, just using that as an example!), who might be a once a year flyer can trump a platinum on the upgrade list that really seems to have lost the plot.

what at chance does the little Aussie battler have?

Note that the P1 relative concept has been explained by Red Roo before.

Whilst it gives a family member P1 priority in the upgrade list, it doesn't change their processing time. The time of processing is based on the status of the flyer.

For example, Bronze members are normally processed around 24 hours before departure for upgrades (assuming there are upgrade seats left after processing other P1s, Platinums, Golds and Silvers - not sure if Silvers and Bronzes are processed at the same time). A Bronze member will still only be considered for an upgrade when it is time for them to be processed, but if a P1 requests on their behalf, their priority at the time of processing will be a lot higher thanks to the P1 benefit.

In theory, this means that a bona fide Platinum member putting in an upgrade request should have their upgrade granted before a Bronze member being sponsored for an upgrade by a P1 is considered.

thanks anat0l - although what might have been previously reported or explained seems at odds with the printed text from the QF website. 'The same high priority' is odd, as the priority for a P1 comes at processing time. A P1 wouldn't have 'high priority' if they were a bronze.

I agree it is not very clear from the website what this means exactly, leading to the kind of interpretation as in defraux . Certainly the latter was my first impression of the benefit, until Red Roo gave a further explanation.

From my experience it gets processed at the "family members status" in this case, my brother is PS, then when we were on board together in J, the CSM mentioned to me that my brother is a WP, I'm like no he is PS, she mentioned on the manifest its WP, & got talking & figured out that because I requested the upgrade as a WP1 it had put my brother as WP (strange that it wasn't WP1 as thats what supposed to happen, but anyways) the CSM also mentioned UM's get put as WP's aswell, so I was told.

Basically if a p1 requests an upgrade for a non-p1 - the upgrade moves to the bottom of the p1 upgrade list. So a bronze being upgraded by a p1 will have higher priority than a vanilla plat with an upgrade request for themselves on the same flight. This is from actual experience.

Isn't each person assigned a PCV (Perceived Customer Value) and any upgrade requests are based on the PCV?

So are we saying that a Bronze inherits the PCV of the Platinum One requesting the upgrade? I thought that had changed a few years back that the status of the person on the booking was used to consider the priority of the upgrade requesnt not the person whose makes the upgrade request.

If the Bronze is "family member" of the P1 it will also get P1 upgrade priority.
I don't read it like that, it reads

"If you use your points to request a Flight Award Upgrade for an eligible family member, at the time their upgrade request is reviewed they'll have their upgrade processed at the Platinum One priority level, even if you're not travelling."

Once their FF status is reviewed, then it goes to the top of the list on that Queue. So if the member is SG, they will be at the top of the SG list.

Thats how I read it anyways.

My last act as P1 was upgrading my mum BNE-LAX.
She is Bronze but on the upgrade list she was classed as P1.

Her friend is Silver and didn't get the upgrade. Mum did.

Proof right there of how it works ;-)

But Bronzes and Silvers get considered for upgrades at the same time. So it's quite possible that the other explanation is true.

If her friend was a Platinum and missed out, then your explanation would be vindicated to a greater degree than this situation.

Silver and bronze get considered at the same time, but silvers still get preference over a bronze.

Yes, however in this case, when a P1 sponsors the Bronze, the latter's upgrade is considered as if they were a P1, i.e. near the top of the list.

Without a P1 sponsoring the Bronze, the Silver member would have had a better chance of getting an upgrade because they are automatically placed higher in the list than Bronze members.

The upgrade list had didn't have the bronze member listed as bronze.

It said p1.

Case closed
I'm still confused. That's what is supposed to happen?

A Bronze who is registered for an upgrade by a P1 would (or should) only trump a Platinum for an upgrade if the latter hasn't been cleared for an upgrade before 24 hours prior to departure. Platinums have up to 48 hours for their upgrade to clear.

What doesn't happen is a Bronze being registered for an upgrade by a P1 and receives their upgrade between 7 days and 24 hours before the flight (i.e. just like a regular P1). Or, at least this is what I'm lead to believe: the P1 benefit changes the effective status in the upgrade priority list, but doesn't change when their upgrade is actually considered.

Maybe we're saying subtly the same thing.
