Was told by Qantas that under a One World Explorer you have to be booked on the flight using the carrier's code, rather than the codeshare. ie. if it's an AA flight you must be booked using the AA code. Is this correct? Obviously is a loss of Frequent Flyer points, hence the question!

2nd question: Totally separate to the One World question above, if I happened to want to book a ticket, e.g. London to Paris on BA, could I book this under a QF number if it existed? If so, how would I do this - is there a way to see a list of flights that have QF numbers?

My experience would indicate it is not true - I flew AA flight number AKL-LAX on QF.

There are lots of ways to see other flight numbers. If you go to the oneworld website and put in your dates and travel destinations it will give you the scheduled flights for that day - including codeshare info. I am not sure if you can book the flight you want as sometimes they need to be part of another flight/ticket combo.

There is not a restriction on using the codeshares as long as it is a route where the airline is allowed to offer them ( e.g. you cannot use QF codehares in US if you are not flying to or from US using QF ). I would suggest not using QF to issue the ticket anyway, but to go to AA since their fuel surcharges are lower

Some European routes do have QF fares quoted but the ones I have seen have only been full fare business class; definately not worth buying

What this mean is as others have posted. "Travel on <any oneworld carrier> Codeshare service operated by <any oneworld carrier> is permitted. Other Codeshares not permitted.

Also would normally be less A,D,L availability (if any) on the codeshares

Not necessarily. Codeshare agreements vary in the manner in which they allocate seats between the codes. In many cases, each airline manages its bucket independently and it is often the operating airline that sells out of the discounted fares first since many people chose the operating airline's code as their first choice, or are incorrectly told by the agent that they have to use the operating airline's code.

I have certainly booked AA codeshares using CX operated flights (to get status bonus) on OWE & CIRC fares. Have never tried to book a QF code on AA flights, as mine have always been in D so there is only upside to booking AA code as fuel surcharge is lower and generally on domestic AA flights there is no D, so they book into A and accrue first class cabin bonus and status credits. But can understand your concern as L accrual is 50% less than on QF. Are you paying? Loss of points may be made up for by reduced fuel fines.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

There are no fuel fines on flights within and between USA and Canada, no matter if booked on QF or AA flight number, or if the ticket is issued by QF or AA.

Thks good to know. What's the tax situation with AA codes on QF's Transpac flights?

Does not matter which code is used. Fuel Fines are determined by the airline issuing the ticket and routing. QF will charge the same fuel surcharge for an AA code as for a QF code on a trans-Pacific flight. And AA will charge a different fuel surcharge if the ticket is ussued by AA, but it will be the same no matter if QF or AA code is used.

AA only charge fuel fines for Trans-Pacific and Trans-Atlantic flights. They do not charge a fuel fine for other flights segments, so having AA issue the ticket is generally going to result in a fuel fine saving. But the actual airline flight codes used will make no difference.

If you are referring to GST; there is none assessable on any international flight. This includes any commercial flight into and/or out of Oz.

Guess the fact that they are importing/exporting people makes it kind of tricky for them ;)

Fell for the trap they want us to, I was referring to surcharges (and more specifically fuel fines) not taxes. Realise that not applicable to bookings to/from Oz.

I have flown LHR-CDG using the QF code on BA metal on a done4, and it earns better ffpoints than using the BA code because QF give a higher minimum points. However I would recommend caution on using the QF codeshare CDG-LHR because you will have no access to the lounge. It is not a BA lounge, they use the Air France lounge for their premium pax, thus J on a BA flight has access, but J on a QF codeshare does not.
