Hi Folk,

A little advice sought here please.

I may have an issue where I need to cancel my LONE4 trip either just prior to departure, or even part way into the trip. This may not happen, but I would like to know the impact should I have to do it. I have read various info incl. star files and my inference is that because I am departing from SWP there is no penalty imposed if I cancel before departure. Likewise if I cancel after departure, the fact that my origin is SWP means I don't pay a 10% penalty.

What I need to know is:

1) Confirmation that I get a full refund if cancelling prior to departure, and...

2) If I cancel part-way through the trip, do I get a refund of the unused portion, and how is that calculated?

Early part of itin is MEL-AKL-ZQN-AKL-LAX-JFK. If, for example, I bailed out when I reached AKL the 2nd time (didn't fly to LOTFAP), any idea how a refund (if any) would be calculated? Obviously I would have to make separate arragments to get myself home as well.

TIA.

Code:

    (A) ORIGIN TC 1
      (1) BEFORE TICKET ISSUANCE - FULL REFUND
      (2) AFTER TICKET ISSUANCE - 10 PERCENT OF TICKETED AMOUNT
    (B) ORIGIN TC 2/3
      NO PENALTY
    (C) IN CASE OF REFUSAL OF OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS/ENTRY PERMIT/ VISA A FULL
REFUND WILL APPLY PROVIDED OFFICIAL DOCUMENTATION FROM THE
APPROVED AUTHORITY IS PRODUCED AND ATTACHED TO THE REFUND
REQUEST.
  (2) AFTER DEPARTURE
     (A) 10 PERCENT OF TICKETED AMOUNT.
EXCEPTION 1 - ORIGIN SW PACIFIC NO PENALTY
EXCEPTION 2 - ORIGIN JAPAN JPY 50000 OR 10 PERCENT OF THE TICKETED
        AMOUNT WHICHEVER IS LOWER.
      (B) FOR PARTIALLY USED TRANSPORTATION THE REFUND IF ANY WILL BE THE
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE FARE PAID AND THE FARE FOR THE TRANSPORTATION
USED LESS THE PENALTY AMOUNT SPECIFIED IN A/ABOVE.
  (3) IN THE CASE OF CERTIFIED DEATH/ILLNESS OF THE PASSENGER OR PASSENGER’S
IMMEDIATE FAMILY MEMBER OR ACCOMPANYING PASSENGER NO PENALTY WILL APPLY.
Basically, If you have commenced travel, the point to point cost of the segments aready travelled will be totalled and this figure subtracted from the fare paid. Any applicable penalties will also be subtracted from the refund figure.

It may be possible that the cost of the sectors travelled will exceed the fare paid, in which case you get nothing and, in theory, you may be liable to pay additional costs.

In essence

When I had the need to cancel a DONE4 the day before departure, I was given a full refund back to my credit card in about 3 weeks (before the CC payment cycle was due). They stated at the time that the refund would be approx 6 weeks, and I was greatly relieved to see it earlier.

Thank for the replies serfty and NM. I am guessing the point-to-point fares used to tally up the segments already used would probably be a on full Y basis or something similar, as opposed to the entire LONE4 being on a discount basis, hence serfty's comment re the partial trip actually potentially costing more than the full OWE LONE itinerary.

Looks like a cancellation prior to travel commencing is far preferable, if I can manage things that way.

Cheers

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I suspect that would get the L class fare (or very similar). I doubt they would charge Y fare as you are not travelling (or earning SC) on a full economy fare.

Either way, yes - the sum of individual sectors adds up very quickly indeed.

They will use the one-way fare offered for the flight - whether its full Y, the lowest offered for the flight, or the lowest available on the day of the flight I really don't know. For QF domestic flights, where they are all one-way, its a low fare. But for international flights one-ways can be very costly.

For example, the cheapest one-way fare for SYD-LAX on 1st May (just a random date I selected) with QF is MKSSOW at $1482, while the cheapest Y fare (Y2OW) is $4366. I suspect it would be the M fare that would prevail so long as all the other fare conditions would have been met.

It doesn't take too may flight segments into a xONEx fare to exceed the ticket cost for the combined one-way fares.

Just a follow-up. I cancelled the RTW ticket prior to departure (and made separate arrangements to go to NZ), and was told, a la NM, that the refund would take 6 weeks, but I actually received it within about 10 days (good). It looks to be maybe 1 to 2 hundred shy of what I paid (bad), but I'll check that out next week.

Cheers

My refund was to 100% of the fare cost. Our Corp TA charges a separate service fee and that is not redundable.
