Does anyone have any experience checking in luggage that's pretty obviously oversize?

It's basically a giant duffle bag (ostensibly a camping/swag bag) that's 115cm long x 45cm wide x 45cm high (= 205cm 'total'). It'll be heavy, but under the 32kg weight limit of a Gold/Platinum FF.

Will the check-in staff have any hesitation? Is a better option avoiding the staff and using the self-service machine?

Thanks everyone.

Where are you flying and which plane is operating the flights?

Given Qantas accept sporting equipment with larger dimensions I reckon it'll be okay, particularly on a short domestic hop with status. Obviously have a backup plan to split luggage into a second bag though (nylon red-white-blue bag maybe?)

If it is mainly flying between SYD/MLB, why not just check it in at the oversized baggage point, if I recall it is just to the left of the counters.

Not sure how you intend to travel with it to/from the airport but overnight courier could be a viable option too if you can send in advance? SYD-MEL is very cheap.

Thanks all.

Courier won’t cut it unfortunately. Sometimes we need it 10pm in one city and 4pm in the other.

I hadn’t considered sporting equipment. Surely they’ll consider a camping bag under one of those categories?

It has two frames in it, so worst case we can check them in separately and suffer the $79 extra bag fee. But I think I’ll take my chance.

Maybe I cant see the forest for the trees? You have quoted the Gold/Plat weight limits, so I assume you are entitled to them. You’re oversize but not over weight. The oversize baggage point is there for a number of reasons, perhaps one of them is to avoid bags like yours jamming the baggage belt? Why not give them a call and find out?

Have traveled with a bike bag int and dom with and without status for a decade or more now and never an issue, oversized is just counted as a standard bag unless over normal limits. You should be totally fine just watch the total weight
