Ka-ching! The holiday that pays for itself | News.com.au

No news has hit the nail on the head with this one. I've just come back from my 2nd shopping holiday this year that has more than paid for itself.

First trip to US in Jan, I went return Y+ on QF and bought the exact same item/s over there that is sold in Australia, my saving was $HUGE. Came out ahead.

Second trip to Thailand, returned 1 way biz, 1 way Y+ on QF with a saving around $3k after all expenses.

Great for consumers and airlines... has to be hurting retail in Australia though?

another excuse to buy a bunch of stuff we don't need. woe is the environment.

I'm travelling to thailand to get dental work done. The facilities are 1st class and work top quality. The $1000 airfare doesnt even begin to touch on the amount I will save on procedures.

Oh definitely. doctors in australia are extortionists!

Umm. I think the idea is to buy stuff you do need.

Guess it depends on what people define as a 'need'. average house size has been steadily increasing over the years to accommodate the things we 'need'

Do you do ANY travel Pu Koh? All travel is unnecessary in the grand scheme of things. As is the internet, computers, mobile phones, working in the city rather than living on a self sustaining farm.

I'm Pu's secretary. He stays on a self sustaining farm and sends me msgs via morse code by reflecting sun light to post on here.

Be fair.

I usually buy all my yearly clothing during such trips as dicussed in the OP. I can't very well walk about nude.

My wife saves us bundles, one trip she refused to fly in J with me. says she'll spend the difference in HKG, that she did. Funny bit was she was upgraded to J at last minute on way home. I looked over there she was big smile on face.

I'm not a big fan of gratuitous consumption of stuff but i'm in Beijing right now and just bought clothes that will cover my work needs for the next year for less than $500 Australian. The same stuff back home would have gone for 4-6 times that. Seriously considering an annual trip to Shanghai to stock up in future.

A refreshing attitude here in this forum where we brag about how many miles we earnt on an insanely long trip to London via several different continents.

We don't need to travel, we don't need much in the way of possessions, we don't really need to work at all, really.

And for those who can minimise their environmental and moral footprint, good on you, I say.

But, like Mr Packer who reckoned that if he didn't minimise his tax, he'd be a right galah, making the most of your resources is just good thinking.

Many things are cheaper overseas than here in Australia. Find sufficient savings, enough to cover the cost of the travel, and you come out ahead.

Or do what has been done for as long as there have been human beings - travel to another place, buy goods which are cheap and plentiful in that place, take them to a place where they are scarce and expensive, sell them and enjoy the profit.

We live in a time when the global market is not a perfect one. Goods are cheaper in one place than another. We live in a time where travel is quick, convenient and relatively cheap. I never fly across the Pacific without reflecting on the difficulty and hardship of the early mariners, taking months and years out of their lives, and here I am crossing a vast ocean without needing to visit the bathroom.

I'm going to make the best of my opportunities. There's nobody in overall charge making sure we all do the right thing, whatever that may be. There are local governments and international associations and multinational corporations and they all have different rules and different ideas of what makes for a perfect world.

In the end, I am my own Prime Minister, my own CEO, my own god. I'm going to do whatever I reckon is a fair thing. If I buy goods at prices set by others who are making a profit at that price, then I'm not going to lose any sleep. I'll decide if I need or can afford those goods. If I consume energy and resources and output carbon dioxide and waste, I'll certainly ponder my part in the global environment, but I know that others are managing this on my behalf, whether I voted for them or not, and I won't worry about it.

Of course, I could reduce my consumption of foreign goods and international travel, but if I don't buy these things, someone else will. The airline will find someone else to buy the empty seat. That warm Columbia jacket will not go unworn. The champagne and cologne will not be poured down the drain.

We live in amazing times. We only get one lifetime. I intend to make the most of the few years I get.

The difference in price covers transport, albeit in a shipping container rather than a comfy seat, and distribution and presentation costs within Australia, not to mention profit for the shareholders and usually a whopping salary package for the bloke at the top, swilling the good stuff in the Chairman's Lounge.

Get best value out of your own dollars, that's what I say.

Bravo, skyring, well written!

as much as I care about environment, our carbon output etc - if we all move to sustainable farms and stop consuming staff, progess will stop and we will find ourselves back in Stone Age

I'm going to Europe in 2 weeks time and stopping in Hong Kong on the way back to do some serious shopping. AUD is very strong and as the HKG dollar is pegged to USD, Hong Kong is one good shoping paradise for Australians

And I don't even ruin any more environment as the flight back home stops in Hong KOng anyway - my conscience is clear

I will, most certainly

Also, let's remember this is a forum on frequent (and not so frequent) flying. Environment concerns are great but really should be discussed in a different kind of forum

I have a plan to go in July for the same. Can you PE a clinic details?
