I have seen a few questions raised and thought I would share my recent trip and how the alliance worked outside Oz.

Flying Air New Zealand, wasn't all that difficult getting into the Koru Lounges, one issue was that they had me as silver on my Air NZ ticket, upon showing Platinum card it was all good, that's obviously an error in communication from Velocity to Air NZ they said.

Flying internally with Delta was different though.. I actually did the status match challenge to get Gold medallion, I must say they look after their Frequent Flyers very well. Only thing with that for them is they don't get lounge access with Gold over there, I was able to get lounge access to all Delta lounges but they had to look and search a few times, in NY they weren't going to let us in, they don't know of the alliance it seems, after getting them to look up the Delta website they saw I was allowed in and then it was all good. The one big benefit I found is that Delta and Air NZ have an agreement with Luggage, we travelled back to Aus on a Delta ticket then an Air NZ ticket and they were able to send luggage all the way though, only one person informed us of this and it made life easy as Delta are much better with more bags than Air NZ so I think it ended up saving us money too.

As far as getting a Status match, it was well worth it, upgraded on most legs, they have abgreat system that means Business is always full on pretty much every flight, there is a standby list and in order of status, then flight delays and finally ticket price, as a matched Gold, was basically at the top each time as well as my wife with no status, I think Virgin Aus should look at doing something like this :) On top of that you get a goog luggage allowance as Delta you pay for this separate, being gold allowed us to check all luggage without issue.

Overall, had no issues with lounge access as some others have said perviously, they needed a nudge on occasions and I think the Delta alliance will be great going on the few flights we did with them.

As another data point, flying SQ departing SIN to MLE, there was no issue getting into the KF Lounge, I can't remmeber which lounge it was other than I presented my VA WP card and the lady registered the FF number and waved me in. Thanks VA!

So on Delta you were basically treated as one of their Medallions including being placed on the Upgrade List? That is interesting news, especially about the luggage. I have 9 flights with them throughout Feb and March and have just ticked over to Silver so will be interested to see if we get on the Upgrade List as well and what happens with luggage. While I don't expect anywhere near the treatment you got, I'll be sure to report back so others may know what to expect. I am still unsure as to whether I will get access to the SkyClubs with my paid Virgin Australia Lounge but not too fussed as I am prepared to pay the $100 for the month pass. I saw that the Lifetime Lounge members were getting special cards in Jan, maybe the regular Lounge members may also be getting cards??

When you were on the upgrade list did it show what status you were on the screens? That might be helpfully to see what the levels of Velocity correlate to in the SkyMiles Medallion program.

I think the reason he was on the upgrade list was due to his fast track to gold medallion and not because of his VFF status although the OP can confirm or deny that.

See that's what happens when you read too fast :)

I agree, it probably wouldn't have had anything to do with VFF Status.

Correct, the Velocity status had nothing to do with upgrades, I thought it would be useful for others to know that you WILL be accepted according to the terms on their status match challenge and it makes the US internal travels quite a good prospect, althought I was matched to Gold, not platinum. Yes you see your name on the list too but again, due to Medallion, not velocity. I missed the last upgrade as my wife had no status and a lot of other golds on the upgrade list.

Velocity was what I used for Lounge access. medallion doesn't get you in the lounge.
