Overpayment of Qantas Frequent Flyer Points

Given that number too, they're worth quite a bit, so even if you were able to squirrel them away, you may be subject to some other type of recovery. Financial institutions are pretty fierce when it comes to not allowing consumers to profit from errors, including sometimes referring to police.

They have "no monetary value" so I imagine it would be difficult for them to do anything about it if you used them and they weren't in a position to deduct them. Perhaps they have an arrangement with QF to claw them back. How would an airline go to court to sue someone for points? What happens though if they accidentally give you a billion points? Think of those guys in NZ and their windfall due to a bank error.

They may have no monetary value but courts do assign a value to the points. Eg divorce cases that have required spilling of points as part of the settlement.

It's just like if the bank erroneously gives you $10 million, it's not yours, spending or transferring it is a crime. That said, I'm not sure why it should be, I'm fairly honest, but if I make a mistake I'll be made to pay for it, yet if they make a mistake, they're not. It's not exactly fair. Eh.

On a side note, I've got a serious saver side account, if I ended up with a large sum of money in my account I'd simply move it to the saver account and hope they didn't notice for a couple months, then happily give them what they deposited back, minus my interest :D - though I'm sure they'd take that too, which isn't fair! :p

Just as TI companies assign them value when making claims.

(When I made a claim last year the TI company valued the points at 2.85 cents each.)

Quite a few cases where they certainly had value and a court case was proceeded with, simply because there is a benefit.

I very much doubt that the Bank will ever notice.

I would just do nothing and use them in the future when convenient for you

I may or may not have been mistakenly or honestly received extra points from a points earning program at some stage in my points collecting career. I'm not giving more details then that! :D

(actually was a fairly small little bonus, but I still enjoyed it!)

Over my last QFF year, I was given over 28k points, in a number of unrelated errors. I don't know if they'll ever chase them up from me, but my account generally never get that low, so it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

In SIN, a cc provider gave me an extra $10 cash back, and then later put my rewards balance into negative. I proceeded to close the account not long after (which would've been my intention anyway). At first they refused to close the account, forcing me to use the card until the balance becomes positive again. I threatened to take them to the monetary authority in SIN, and the account was closed within seconds.
