Hi Folks,
I am travelling to Langkawi via KL on Malaysia Airlines from sydney and have the following situation, would appreciate your advice etc.

I land at 21:00 into KL International and have an 08:30 domestic via Malaysian in the morning.

Question is, where is the most cost effective place to stay aside from the airport lounge in KLIA? The Airside Transit Hotel looks good but, how do I handle the baggage / immigration procedures?

If I go all the way though to immigration etc I can stay in the hotel outside, however their rates were fairly steep, for a short overnight stay.:?:

We had the same predicament in May 2008 and after some research chose a B and B called Jawadene. Run by an American and his wife they will meet you at the airport take you to their home and return you in the morning after breakfast for a very reasonable fee. From memory we paid about $AUD70
No website but you can book them on through Asiarooms.
Second option is the Tune Hotel at the LLc in KL.
Have a good trip

One of the airside hotels is the Pan Pacific, and is great if you are willing to fork out for the night there.

I have had MH124 into KUL, and left on a domestic flight out to Kota Kinabalu the next morning. At PER, I was checked in for both flights, issued both BP's and had the check in sent straight through.

All you have to do is follow the signs, which are plentiful. Clearing immigration is relatively quick and hassle free, and is the same the following morning.

However the Pan Pacific from memory can get a tad pricey.

Hi mannej,
So if I am checking luggage through to Langkawi, get Bp's for Langkawi as well from sydney I will be able to stay at the transit hotel for a few hours, clear immigration in the morning and head off to Langkawi. Does that mean that I will clear customs in Langkawi?

You are on a domestic flight , so you need to clear all immigration/customs at KL, I would get you bags checked to KL so you can have them overnight, might be worth trying the Concorde Inn if you dont want to spend to much money, think Fomula 1 without the bunk for $60 at asia rooms.

MH and flights to Langkawi seem a little funny with respect to that. Did a BNE-KUL-LGK flight, and the KUL-LGK is indeed domestic - so clear immigration in KUL, but bags were checked all the way through.

LGK is an ""international" airport, and has customs facilities, but we collected bags and just walked out (they were not manned). I guess you may need to get some one called if you really want something done, but was not an issue for us. Langkawi is a duty free zone (so booze is quite reasonable). Going back to KL, is a domestic flight, but supposedly with customs restrictions on duty free amounts brought back in - but no obvious way it gets checked, considering it just arrives back at KUL domestic.

We didn't have transit issues, as arrived first thing in the morning (around 6.00am), had a shower in the Golden Club in the Satellite (main big international hub), then got the train back to the main terminal for the first flight to LGK of the day.

This was all done on the one ticket, J class through award upgrade. It costs exactly the same (base fare and award upgrade points) for a BNE-LGK return with a stop over in one direction in KUL as for a straight BNE-KUL return - so in effect got a free return J flight KUL-LGK.

Not that it was much, but the Golden Lounge in LGK has now been closed - facilities now only provided for the international departures to SIN.

I would not be risking a through check in the case of the OP, it means no bags overnight. LGK is oten used for International arrivals from SIN and there are many charters from the EU as well, I have arrived off a SIN flight and a KUL flight and there was a big difference.

The last time I overnighted in KUL was MNL-KUL-BNE, with the former arriving around 2200 in KUL and the latter departing around 0900 the next day. I have no status on MH; I used the airside transit hotel for a 6 hr stay, with my luggage through-checked to BNE.

Using the Airside transit hotel allows you to remain in the sterile area. It wasn't exactly cheap when I stayed there, but then again that was when I was in high school with no job. Looking at the current rates from the KLIA website, a Superior room (the most likely room you will get, as they are the most common, but double-check room availability before you book) costs RM 160 for 6 hours, with RM 20 per hour after that for up to 3 more hours. So 8 hrs in the hotel will cost you RM 200, or using xe.com today that's about AUD 65. The rooms are only basically furnished, but clean enough. (Think Holiday Inn; nothing special, but clean, simple and presentable). You can also get rates for a shower, sauna or gym time without having to pay for a room.

Sleeping in KUL airport might be OK but KUL has gotten considerably bigger and busier since I last was there, so my guess is that that might not be the most comfortable option (albeit definitely the cheapest option).

I'd be tempted to through-check bags and just carry the essentials with you in cabin baggage (including a change of clothes), even if you leave the airport for your overnighter.

I'd tend to agree with the suggestion going for an airport hotel (if money isn't an issue) and only bringing a change of clothes with you. It is easier just to have the luggage sent through the whole way as MH are fairly reliable.

I would not sleep at KUL, as the seats seem to be disappearing unless near the starbucks etc. It is not as sleepable compared to somewhere like HKG.

I don't think that these travel arrangements are complicated, and the process should be pretty smooth.
