Ovation of the Seas, and a few flights along the way.

We have just left Dubai en route to Oman. I am not sure how many passengers there are on board, but the ship feels very spacious. There are areas where we can walk through with no one else around. There are so many restaurants that getting table is very easy and no waiting in lines to be seated. Sun is now going down for our second night on board. Tomorrow we will be in Muscat for a shore excursion.

Our first visit to Oman, and Muscat is an amazing city. Too much to see in one day, and we would love to come back and explore more. The people here are very proud of their city and are quick to let you know they are more liberal than other countries in this region. Although when it comes to entering the mosque, I think they were more strict than the Blue Mosque in Istanbul. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque was amazing, and huge, accommodating upwards of 20,000 throughout the main areas and outside prayer areas. Although very new, being completed in 2001, it showed the same attributes as the blue mosque with the grandeur and large chandelier, which weighs 21 tonnes.

***3 DAYS AT SEA - RESTAURANTS AND STATE ROOM REVIEW***

After visiting Oman we have three days at sea, and time to review this huge ship and some f the facilities. Our stateroom is on deck 13, the highest accommodation deck. The benefits are great uninterrupted views, the downside is the 4:30am wake up call when the deck chairs are arranged on deck 14 directly above our room. This is the time they wash the decks and move everything around to clean and set up for the day. We will choose a lower deck next time because of this. There is no noise from the pool deck itself, just the 4:30am deck chair scramble. The ship has some settling in noises. We have a clunking noise from the verandah washing track outside our room which is so loud sometimes, you need to keep the verandah door closed. Not a huge issue because it is stifling hot outside so the air conditioning is a welcoming relief.

The stateroom itself is large enough for two people, with a king size bed, a large sofa and a reasonable workspace. Lighting is fantastic. The bathroom is the normal size cruise ship bathroom, but our shower has a glass door, not the stick to you curtains that some cruise lines supply.

A large flat screen television has satellite television. There are two Royal Caribbean channels which show specials, reviews and news. Although the daily schedules are still delivered to your stateroom daily, RCL have an app that can be downloaded to any IOS device (all restaurant and other reservation computers are Apple) that does not need to be connected to an Internet package and works off internal wifi. This app allows you to book restaurants, activities, and displays all shore excursions in your calendar. You can also see your account, nearly in live time, having a delay between leaving the restaurant and getting back to your room, and it will be displayed. Handy for us last night when we were over charged by $85 for a few bottles of wine that we did not have. It was fixed swiftly by guest services.

The staff are very helpful, and it is obviously there are so many new staff in training, but are trying so hard to impress. If you are tolerable it is not a worry.

The new dynamic dining means there is no main dining room, and you book into many complimentary or fee based restaurants. You still have the option of the buffet or cafe style eateries if you don't want to go to a restaurant. This system really works and there has never been queues for meals and it certainly does not feel like 4000 passengers are on this ship at meal times.

Our first night was at the American Icon Grill.

The Maryland crab cake and New York Sirloin Steak were very tasty, and cooked perfectly to order. Service was good and enthusiastic. For a complimentary restaurant, we could not have wished for a better start. It went downhill from here.

The second restaurant, Silk, showed promise with the menu and I was really looking forward to our meal. What a disappointment. Not only was the meal nearly inedible, but our waitress was rude and abrupt. She was one of those people that you knew would argue to the death even if she knew she was wrong. She did get my wife's meal wrong, and delivered someone else's meal to her, and argued that was what my wife had ordered. After a few tense moments all was rectified. The two ladies at the table next to use experienced a similar treatment but with their wine not their food.

The menu was

The Vietnamese tacos were interesting. The pork belly was scarce and what was there was more like overlooked crackling that was like peanut brittle. The 'taco shell' was a pork bun dough that was so sweet it was sickening. It was so sticky that you left half of it on the plate when trying to eat it. The Asian style duck was like cardboard. No, I think cardboard would have been better! I didn't try desert!

Next was Chic.

The smoked mozzarella ravioli was pretty good and my wife's beef carpaccio was excellent. I then had the crispy salmon and my wife had the onion crusted chicken. I think the same chef that cooked my duck the previous night cooked the salmon. This was so dry that it was inedible. My wife said the chicken was perfectly cooked and enjoyed her meal. Things have to get better. We start tomorrow night on the meal package restaurants. We have selected Jamie Oliver's Italian, Wonderland and Chops Grill. The wonderland restaurant is billed to be similar to a Heston experience where they decide your menu selections from the available dishes. The descriptors and menus are:

For the sake of doing a full review of the eating options, we have eaten at the buffet. It is much bigger than the other buffets on Royal Caribbean. All food stations are manned by either chefs or kitchen staff, and this appears to reduce waste with not many overloaded plates were seen. The food is typical mass produced fare. There were some reasonably good options for roasts, stir fry and an overwhelming bread and cheese selection. There is also an American hot dog stand in the sea plex area (more on that later) where there are bumper cars and sports courts, and a pizzeria in the main centrum style plaza.

Next review will be on entertainment options.

By media reports, it's lucky you're not on Harmony of the Seas - still like a building site on its first cruise with many unhappy passengers.
