A little while ago I posted the extraordinary service of the complete QANTAS team in working together to fly, with 13 other members of my family, a son who had a terminal disease who badly wanted to see Disneyland. In short, after the work of his cardiologists, it was deemed OK to fly and on October 4, after checking in the entire family through the First Class Lounge, we left on QF11 for LAX. The work put in by the entire QANTAS staff cannot be described in enough adjectives - just superlative.

10 family members in Premium Economy and 3 of us in Business.

The catering crew hand delivered Rodney special diet to the aircraft on both ends and it was cooked on the aircraft.

Everyone of the crew addressed him by name (he is intellectual handicapped) and he travelled in 12E ex Sydney and 13E ex LAX. The crew made him a special bed and he slept for 8 hours ex Sydney and 9 hours ex LAX.

On arrival in LAX, we were asked to delay our departure because I thought that it would help with wheelchair departure - but NO, Rodney was taken to the flight deck and had his photograph taken with the crew - just absolutely marvellous - while his father stood back and cried.

Great time in LAX, 3 days in Disneyland plus the usual other "things" and we returned on QF12 on Friday 11 October. The attention and service on return was as good as the original flight. Met at LAX by the station manager who shepherded him through LAX security - (a challenge at the best of time) and a great flight home with an outstanding crew.

I have not opened this site for some weeks and on opening it was noted that I had been absent from the forum for several weeks and suggested I share a travel tale. So this is it.

I never cease to be amazed at the goodwill of Australians - we argue - we fight for what we think is right - we vote on Saturdays and then go to work on Mondays knowing that we have an amazing democracy and just get on with life - no matter our thoughts - but when push comes to shove we come together as one to do what we can for each other - and this is what happened on QF 11 & QF12 -

He had a great time and this great time was only achieved by the QANTAS crew, from our Travel Agent through P1, ground staff, especially the flying crew and it was this that made this trip something very special. Thank you QANTAS.

Rodney passed away last Friday morning.

Thank you for sharing. In this time of grief your ability to write such wonderful words about those who helped you and your son are much appreciated.

It makes us realise that sometimes our complaints are very minor in the grand scheme of things.

My condolences, it's certainly pleasing to hear how your family and son were treated. Thanks for the reminder of what the valuable thing in life is, time with loved ones.

My sincere condolences, thank you for sharing your experience. And its so nice that the memory was enhanced by the special treatment by Qantas.
Some beautiful memories to treasure as a family.

This sort of post puts reality and the important things in perspective. (Especially when people post about a being asked for a ID when checking in!)

Thanks for sharing and the news no parent can face.

What a beautiful story to share but very sad ending.
I hope that those memories of a special experience shared will remain forever & kudos to QANTAS.

Your story brought tears to my eyes. Thanks for sharing and my condolences.

While I was away recently some terrible tragedies struck friends and acquaintances of mine. I won't hijack the thread, but hearing of all of these things really puts one's life into perspective and hopefully makes us better people.

I hope Red Roo has seen this. It really is wonderful to be Australian.

Condolences for your loss, very sad.

I am very pleased you and QF were able to fulfill your son's wish and give him some joy and you a trip which will give you some great (if tinged with sorrow) times to remember.

It sounds like your Rodney was a unifying force, even through these very tough times. And that your airline delivered the goods. Sometimes you only get one chance to get it right. Well done Team Rodney!.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I'm happy in the sense that Rodney was able to experience Disneyland with his family and now resting in peace.

Echoing everyone else here, thank you for sharing.
