I intend booking a flight to the USA, Melbourne - New York via LA but I want to the return flight to be Orlando - Melbourne via LA.
I am unable to do this on the Qantas website.
Any suggestions?

Welcome to AFF!

You’ll need to call Qantas to have them do the booking for you. If the website is lacking key functionality you may be able to get the telephone assistance fee waived, as it’s not your fault*.

And it appears it is possible anyway.

*Assuming such a routing is allowed anyway, never tried such a thing so don’t really know, but it would certainly appear you’ll need to call them up.

Can you provide some more information regarding the difficulties ?
I just tried some random dates in August and was able to get MEL-LAX-JFK open jaw MCO-LAX-MEL.
It is also possible online to book the JFK-MCO sector but the fare cost is significantly higher with this included ( random dates booked into flexi-saver  )

Are you stopping over in LAX or just connecting?

If you are going MEL QF x/LAX QF JFK /- LAX QF MEL I would use the multi sector tool on the QF website as mentioned already by others.

If stopping over en-route I think you might be better off calling QF as you want them to calculate half a return fare MEL/JFK that includes a free stopover in LAX & half a return fare MEL/LAX (even though travelling LAX/MEL).

If you sectorise your journey on the multi sector tool eg 15 Jun MEL/LAX & 17 Jun LAX/JFK it may want to charge you a sector fare for the latter journey when in most cases it should be included.

I would also compare the cost of including the MCO/LAX flight on your international ticket vs buying a separate one on another carrier as it may be quite a bit cheaper to do MCO/LAX separately. Check out www.priceline.com for comparisons with different airlines then go direct to the airline website to book.

It's worth noting that if you purchase a separate ticket MCO/LAX most carriers will charge you extra for checked luggage (except Southwest) whereas this may be included if your MCO/LAX flight is included on your international ticket.
