Greeting All,

I have picked up a lot of information from reading this excellent forum. Hopefully someone is able to assist with this maiden post.

I have an impending RTW trip in October for business, originating in Melbourne and then on to the US, internal US, Saudi Arabia (Jeddah) and then back to Melbourne via Hong Kong. Having obtained QFF WP status last year I am keen to use OW airlines as much as possible for lounge access, upgrades, etc. I also need SC's as it may be a struggle to requalify this year due to arrival of first child in May and subsequent drop in flight frequency....

I believe a OW RTW Explorer will get me to everywhere I need to go except Jeddah, so this may involve flight to Bahrain or Dubai and then other connection from there. I did notice that the OW Global Explorer includes flights with Gulf Air (easier connections to Jeddah), but I assume that points and SC's cannot be earned on the Gulf Air flights. Is this correct?

I also vaguely recall reading of issues regarding earning points on OW transatlantic flights. Is this a possibility or is the lack of sleep contributing to my confusion..... All flights will be booked in economy.

No QF FF points or SCs for GF flights unless using a QF code on a codeshare service.

The only issue with trans-Atlantic serivices is with BA and AA FF programs where each will not credit miles for the other's flights between UK and USA. No earning issues for QF FF program.

But note that both AA and BA flights in L class (as booked for ATW fares in economy) have poor earning rates. Best option for QF FF earning for trans-Atlantic is AY HEL-JFK or IB to/from Spain.

Thank you for the advice, NM. I had not considered AY or IB, and seeing as I don't need to stop in the UK, this sounds a better option. Are you aware of QF offering codeshare on GF to Jeddah?

I believe the only QF codeshare on GF is between SIN and BAH.

Plenty of *A options for getting to JED, including SQ from SIN and BD from LHR.

If using OWE, then find the cheapest place for a SV (Egyptair) or similar return - perhaps CAI - and add to the itinerary.

AY has a daily flight Hel - Dubai.
Not far to Jeddah from there.
Then back to Dubai for CX to Hong Kong and onto Melbourne

That's still over 1000 miles and likely over 2 hours to fly each way.

CIA is only 750 miles (still likely a 90 mins flight), and I expect not very expensive on EgyptAir. And you can see some Pyramids if you plan a stopover, and even pick up a cheap a cheap DONE4 from there ;).

True Cairo is closer than Dubai, but the trip Cairo to HKG isn't as direct as Dubai - HKG - a non stop flight.

Perhaps the shortest is to do something like LHR-CAI//DXB-HKG on the OneWorld Explorer, and purchase separate CAI-JED-DXB if one-way fares are available at an affordable price. At least the travel is all in the same direction.

From a quick search it looks like the two one way fares (CAI-JED & JED-DXB) would be approx $400 to $500 around the dates that I intend to travel which my employer should cover without question. There is the added advantage of stopover to see pyramids (on the list of things to do .... besides business travel shouldn't always just be about work:))

Now if only I could get my employer to meet the cost of the DONE4....

I appreciate the suggestions.

Considering Shano was also looking to get value across the Altantic which he will not do going into London, the JFK - Hel is the best bet, then Hel - dubai is direct and gets full points. Areturn fare on gulf, emirates Dub - Jeddah would be reasonable.

Just one problem, AY don't fly HEL-DXB. So the only OneWorld Way to DXB is BA via LHR or CX via HKG.

AA have some codeshares with Swiss etc that can connect to AY flights, but not eligible for OWE fares.

Huh? Do you mean ZRH (as in Zurich, Switzerland)? The second leg of that journey is operated as an AA codeshare by LX (Swiss) and therefore is not eligible for OneWorld Explorer (xONEx) fare. Though could be used with Global Explorer (xGLOBxx) fare.

However, the Global Explorer fare is less attractive for FF earning capability that the OneWorld Explorer fare. So yes it is likely the shortest route, but probably not the best for earning QF FF benefits.
