Hi all,

After plenty of procrastination I'm about to book my LONE5, can you guys tell me if this looks ok?

At present I have
SYD-BOS-JFK//LGA-TPA//MIA-SCL-PUQ-SCL//BUE-IGR//GIG-BCN(via MAD)-MAD-SYD(Via LHR)

How much does it cost for me to obtain extra sector in South America? I believe I'm entitled to up to 2 at a set rate?

Ideally I would like to go from PUQ-MDZ(Via SCL) but i understands this counts as two sectors?

Also who should I book the ticket through? (Travel agent, Direct with airline?)

Many thanks

Congrats Chazmen. One problem is there are no SYD-BOS flights, only SYD-JFK.

Extra sectors are available (20 max permitting) at a cost of $150. A copy of the fare rules are here:

As for ticketing, it seems the consensus is AA as they don't charge exorbitant fuel fines. There is an AA desk in the US that you can call but I'm unsure of the number.

I checked this on mileage monkey and it looked ok (I havent done things like open jaw segments so not my forte.

You are only using about 13 flights though - you could slip in a few more flights if you wanted - say with the US and maybe in Europe. You also can add 4 segments to the end of your trip - say SYD-MEL-ADL-SYD - you could only have a stopover in one of those so you could say fly to Mel in the afternoon - stay the night and get a morning flight to ADL stay for a week and then fly home - you would only pay the taxes.

I would book through the AA rtw desk - I will see if I can find the number around here somewhere.

EDIT

This was the route I put into mileage monkey

SYD-lax-BOS-JFK,LGA-TPA,MIA-SCL-PUQ-SCL,BUE-IGR,GIG-mad-BCN-MAD-lhr-SYD

I took a few liberties :)

The cost is A$150 per extra segment in L. You are only allowed up to 2 extra per continent but none for continent of origin (SouthWest Pacific in ur case).

AA ATW desk in the US can be contacted at +18002473247. You will get the best results calling weekday mornings (their time - ie around midnight AEST).

You will need to contact AA Sydney at 1800673486 for payment.

The savings in fuel surcharges is massive.

Otherwise you could also get a travel agent who's willing to plate your itin on AA ticket stock - but you might be stung with a service fee going via a TA.

I booked a LGLOBE ticket and we are leaving a week from Friday. If you look at the threads I posted, you will see the preplanning for an L class ticket which may be of help because most of the members here book D class. Don't bother with travel agents, they will try to force you to plate on QF and you will get hit with the fuel fines.

Thanks for your quick and informative responses!

A few additional questions:
1/ If i'm to fly from the 13th December, I assume this would be high season? What would my ticket cost roughly be?
2/ If I were to return from my trip (as in earlier post) Mid Feb to Sydney (home), what are the conditions and how long would I have to use the available trips in Australia I have at my disposal?
3/ To confirm I can purchase 2 additonal flights in Sourth America for $150 each?
4/ Can I upgrade certain legs of my trip to Business class?
5/ Would you suggest joining Qantas Club (at a corporate subsidised rate) for the trip?

Thanks

LHONE5 is AUD4079 and +++ of up to $1,000.

Code:
FOR TICKETING ON/AFTER 01AUG 06 TRAVEL FROM LAST STOPOVER MUST COMMENCE
NO LATER THAN 12 MONTHS AFTER DEPARTURE FROM FARE ORIGIN.
- so 12Dec08.

That's USD150. If purchased in Australia it would be AUD200 each:
Code:
EACH ADDITIONAL SEGMENT AT CHARGE ...
ECONOMY -USD150/AUD200/GBP 75/HKD1200/EUR100

Only on QF flight Numbers flying Qantas "Metal".

Possibly; it's only useful when flying QF/BA/AA.

You might like to consider Joining AAdvantage and doing a "Platinum Challenge".

Fly across the Pacific on AA flight numbers and you would have American Airlines "Platinum" status and complimentary entry to QP's by the time you arrived in JFK; this status would last until end of February 2009.

1/ Any idea if I can do PUQ-MDZ? I imagine i'd have to route through SCL but how many sectors would this count as?
2/ Is it advisable to lock in my dates now as it will be peak season?
3/ Is my trip a LONE4 or LONE5?

Thanks

If you route through SCL - it is one extra segment I think - not possible to validate on mileage monkey I am afraid.

I would book it ASAP (if you have the cash) as this will book into discount economy and might sell out (I only have experience of D fares so availability is less so I do book early) - the price will be locked in now though.

Yes, you will need to route through SCL. There are no direct flights between PUQ and MDZ. So it will be two segments out of your 4 available in SA and 20 for the ticket.

1/ Each segment must be on a oneworld flight number on oneworld metal. So if PUQ-//-MDZ is operated by a
oneworld carrier you can do it. Looking at the oneworld Desktop Timetable you will indeed need to transfer at SCL. A segment is a flight number on a given day; so routing through SCL would be two segments. You are currently using 3 SA segments and you can have 4 before you need to consider spending AUD200 on purchasing another.

2/ Yes

3/ LHONE5 as you visit 5 continents (even though you do not stop over in Asia, you must transit there on the LHR-SYD leg so it counts as a continent.

Thankyou all for your continuing help on this.

To avoid the peak season LONE5 fare, am I able to being my trip prior to the cutoff by flying internally in Australia (example to Melbourne and back in November) and then leaving on my trip as oringinally planned?

Thanks

Hi all,

I've finally rang through to the AA number to book my LONE5 to save on the fuel surcharge, and they were very helpful......but our booking agent over the phone seems to think we will only get 50% of all points on QF's as we are booking through AA.....is this the case or do Qantas FF like myself get 100%?

Chaz

Hi Chazman.

If you book onto a QF flight number and credit to QF, you will receive normal points with QF. If the agent has booked you onto the AA codeshare on Qantas Metal, then you will earn the AA L points with QF with is 50%. Be very careful and ask them to make sure you are only booked on the QF flight number (they will try for AA because they will receive some revenue). Regardless of who you are booked with, it won't affect the SC's.

Cheers,

It all depends on the flight numbers Chazmen.

If you are crediting to QF and flying an AA flight number in L class, then yes, you'll only get 0.5 points per mile flown. If however, you are flying on a QF flight number (doesn't matter who it was booked through) and crediting to QF, then for L class you'll get 1 point per mile flown.

Refer to the QF airline earning table here.

Guys late night query.

Just got off the phone from AA RTW desk who tell me once I return from my LONE5 trip back to sydney, that I can't then use my sectors in Australia as my point of origin was Sydney.

This is contradictory to advice that I have recieved in this forum, I was told that I may after returning to sydney from my trip then fly for example to cairns (within a year from origin) and back to Sydney.

Please Help

Chaz
