one-way fares

Dilemma.
Looking at going to Anchorage, AK, early next year.
Delta has a $400 return fare LAX-ANC, which I will just pay for separately. Easy peasy.
Have enough Velocity points to come back in J class LAX-MEL on V Aus and was just prepared to pay the economy fare from MEL-LAX.
But, the one-way fare is $1418 compared to $860 if you book it as a return flight.
So my question is, is that just tough cough for me? The pitfalls of booking a one-way flight are that you must be prepared to fork out extra?
Any help on sourcing a cheap one-way fare would be much appreciated.

legacy carriers generally package international returns - domestic they have got one ways.

one possibility might be to get to hnl than a jq one-way is normally around $500

A one-way fare on Alaska Airlines from HNL-ANC will cost about $375.00.
The only problem is that this flight leaves HNL in the evening, and the Jetstar flight arrives into HNL in the morning - so it might only be worthwhile if you intend to spend couple of days in HNL.

You could book the $860 return trip, travel to LAX and then simply no show for the LAX-MEL portion.

Ostensibly you may be up for any fare difference between the one way and return fares if you do this but unless someone has made a habit of it with the same airline, I have never come across this happening - ever.

It's actually $1460 return, and $1418 one way, so I wouldn't be better off. I probably didn't make that clear enough.
HNL has some appeal though.
I see there is a $1300 Air NZ fare that involves a layover in AKL that might be worth investigating.

Why not book it as a return trip (for the extra $48) with the return date as far in the future as possible? Who knows, maybe in a year's time you will have enough FF points for a Aust-LAX one way award and then your homeward leg is sorted for minimal extra expenditure
