Hey team,

Quick question that I cant find the answer too anywhere. May be because its a bit odd. ;)

If I request a One Up upgrade on a flight can I still use my Velocity account to retain the status points or will they be credited to my Airpoints number?

This is my first flight with Air New Zealand in a long time so I am only just learning about the One Up thing now...

The flight has been booked with my Velocity number on the booking just want to make sure I dont miss out on all the Velocity points if I request the upgrade.

Thanks in advance.

I can't answer your question, but as an observation ...

I flew four separate long-distance sectors in PE with Air NZ last year, booked with my Velocity number. In theory these were four separate opportunities for Air NZ to offer/invite me to bid for a One Up upgrade - I heard nothing. My conclusion is that Velocity members are not elegible for, or perhaps not considered for, One Up upgrades.

I'd be interested to hear whether or not you're successful in getting a One Up upgrade offer as a Velolicy member!

Hey Quaffer,

Thanks for the reply.

I wasnt invited to bid for the One Up upgrade, I didnt realise this was the case...? I simply logged in to myairnz.com and can request an upgrade. During this process there seems to be no point where you airpoints number is needed.

Hence my confusion....

Yes, there are several ways to get a One Up upgrade according to the One Up page on the Air NZ web site - sorry, I can't include the link because I don't have enough posts :(

I booked my flights direct through the AirNZ web site (entering my Velocity number at the time) and assumed the first case applied to me ... I'd be invited to bid for an upgrade. In hindsight I should have called the Contact Centre to confirm whether or not I was elegible.

In your case, you're an Airpoints member ... perhaps One Up upgrades are restricted to Airpoints members??

Yeah, here-in lies my question.

As I am a member of both loyalty programs which will apply if I request the upgrade? Velocity, as its on my booking OR Airpoints, as I have made a request?

....

I think your best bet would be to ring the Air NZ Contact Centre to find out; if you do please post the result here.

This is indeed possible, call AirNZ and have your Airpoints number added to your booking and have your Velocity number deleted at the same time. This will allow you to request a OneUp upgrade (FYI The booking MUST be ticketed by Air New Zealand, Virgin Australia ticketed bookings are ineligible for OneUp upgrades).

Once you get to the check-in desk on the day of travel just ask the agent to move your Airpoints number to the FQTR field and re-add your Velocity number to FQTV, this will allow crediting of points and SCs to your Velocity account. most agents should know how to do this...

For the acronym-challenged, please could you explain what the FQTR and FQTV fields are?

Also, just to clarify my first posting in this thread, my flights last year were booked through the Air NZ website, and my ticket was issued by Air NZ.

For the acronym-challenged, please could you explain what the FQTR and FQTV fields are?

FQTV = Frequent Traveller (Most Frequently used in Bookings with only one FF number)
FQTR = Frequent Traveller Redemption (The number used for Airpoints redemptions, OneUp Upgrades etc.)
FQTS = Frequent Traveller Level Of Service (Used if for example a Passenger wishes to credit to their Velocity Red Account whilst being recognised as a NZ Gold Elite)

I got an email today from Air NZ asking if we would like to bid to go OneUp. We are flying to LAX later this month on Air NZ in PE. I am Velocity Gold, hubby is Velocity Silver and I put those numbers on the booking. I do have an Airpoints membership but have no idea where my card is so I never use it. I reckon its worth a go but I won't be bidding anywhere near the $6K it would cost us to upgrade. If the bids are accepted, great. If not, it didn't cost anything :)

Thanks serfty - I saw your post after I put my bids on lol. Just have to wait now to hear back sometime between Tuesday and Friday next week. I'm not overly hopeful as I have Scottish blood, if you know what I mean!

Does it get taken into account that you have previously flown in J, paid for in cash? And do VA Gold passengers get the same consideration as Air NZ Gold passengers?

Got an email this morning confirming our upgrade to J for the AKL-LAX leg of our trip. Wow! I didn't think I had a chance since my bid was on the low side. Now we need the same for the return leg :)
