Was thinking Freo.

Oh, when you said surrounding towns!!!!! The City of Fremantle is very nice, winter isn't the best time to visit, but then again it is cooler. A good hotel to stay at is the Esplanade and you can get good specials using wotif. There is also a good train service between the CBD and Freo. Depending on what you want/like to do, Freo can be an arvo trip, a day trip or even several days.

Someone told me it's like the Perth version of St Kilda (where I live). If so - I anticipate I'd have a big night out at Freo.

Might do an overnight there - or do they have some sort of Nightrider service back to Perth?

As for PER itself there's an SPG so I'd be staying there - Sheraton Perth, even though it's meant to be cough from all accounts. It's still Starpoints.

I think the best way I can describe it is, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane are all great places to go and have a holiday with plenty of things to do. Perth really has little in the way of tourism going for it. It is more a base to work from, you go to Margret River, the pinnacles, Kalgoorlie, New Norcia, Broome Monkey Mia etc. The few exceptions would be Freo, Kings Park is worth five minutes to have a city view and there is this thing called the Bell Tower.

Given you like your wine, you might try (if they're still going), a wine cruise up the Swan River. I did this many years ago. The trip started at Barrack St wharf, and we were thinking on the outbound journey what a dud it was. We were rationed one or two glasses of ordinary white and everyone was sitting meekly in their seats. Halftime was an average meal at one of the Swan wineries, with a bit of music and dancing, and the wine started to flow a bit more freely.

The trip back was absolute (enjoyable) mayhem. The wine flowed and everyone had an excellent time. Such an unexpected contrast to the trip out. Just don't drive to Barrack St.

There are a couple of companies offering wine cruises (Captain Cook, Oceanic Cruises) to the Swan Valley. They do revise the tours from time to time, but I certainly recall doing a tour where the wine was much more freely flowing on the return journey than the outgoing

I do like Perth. A nice place to relax and unwind.

I would have thought that NorthBridge would be more of a big night out place than Freo. Freo is nice with a bit of a St Kilda feel to it, but I like Northbridge more. Better restaurants and some decent pubs and clubs. Does get a bit rough at night though I've heard (but havn't seen the roughness myself).

Depends what you are into really.

The Swan Valley is a bit underrated as a tourist destination, but has been getting more popular in recent years. Wineries vary in quality a lot (from those producing rough red all the way through to the much more pleasant wines), but they are much, much closer to the city than Margaret River.

There is also a growing collection of micro-breweries in the Swan Valley as well. Five or six that I know of and the closest one to me is maybe a five minute drive from my home

Don't forget the distilleries on the Highway , or the Junction Hotel for lunch on Fridays .
