As noted by Aeroroutes, Qantas is now selling tickets for a one-off MEL-FCO flight via PER on 15 September. The flight number is QF205 and, interestingly, it's entirely a daytime flight. Tickets aren't being sold on the return leg, which leads me to believe this aircraft is positioning for a one-way charter.

The usual QF5 service to Rome goes out of SYD.

Perhaps of interest to some here... you can book this just from MEL to PER. ;)

One benefit is the MEL > PER sector departs from the international terminal making it an International Domestic flight.

A great way to get to Italy from PER with a very respectable 11:35am departure. Huge fan of these day flights, as they seem to really help with managing jet lag (you go to bed soon after you arrive). Not sure how the jet lag would be originating in MEL would be though.

0725 departure!? I know it’s 5pm somewhere in the world, but you could’ve done better than that Matt! Surely with all your “extensive” backend QF connections, can’t you just get ‘em to make it a 1725 departure? 😉

I realise you mean this as a joke, but hey, I'm just the messenger - I didn't schedule this flight 😅

I believe they needed to get the plane to Rome by early evening so they could operate the charter flight coming back as a late evening departure.

Does PER-ROM shorten the distance sufficiently it doesnt need the tech stop in SIN that QF9 is requiring? Or are they hoping airspace restrictions will be better by September?

Is it bookable as PER-FCO?
Any idea what the charter is (and where’s the return or outbound leg for the charter group)?

QF9 already resumed without stopping in SIN (recommenced 29 April).
