On-departure upgrade

This may well have been asked before, in which case I apologise.

I'd like to ask what the chances of 'normal' upgrade not being available but on-departure upgrade being available.

I'm talking full economy to business class upgrade, domestic. Any help would be most appreciated.

I would suspect there is no defitive answer on this, as it is going to vary considerably depeding on sector, day, time and so on. Having said that I have had much more success in getting an ODU than the normal upgrades. To I would say your chance is reasonable, but depends on how sold out business class is on the particular flight you have in mind

Thanks Oz_Mark! So far, there are business class seats left from what I can see. Does QF normally let you have the ODU if 30 min prior to departure there's still a vacant Business Class seat, or is it not the case? Sorry, I'm rather clueless on this!

I like oz_mark have had more sucess with ODU than an as you say 'normal' upgrade. However there are times when I have been told there are no upgrades available, yet there are empty seats still in business. In regard to the 30mins, they may actually announce the boarding of the flight, then call your name to come to the desk and advise if you have or haven't been given your ODU.

For a domestic upgrade, this can be confirmed once the ticket is issued as long as there is availability in the award business inventory (U Class).

For an ODU, depending on how busy the flight is they may confirm it as soon as you ask at the Qantas Club desk.
If the flight is busy then if there is a chance, then they will take your boarding pass and let you know around 30 mins before departure whether you are successful.
If there is no chance of an upgrade, then they'll just let you know as soon as you request it

To show you how late an upgrade can come thru, I was on Mel-Bris flight yesterday, all pax were on board, they were about to close up, 737 plane and a new boarding list was handed to purser. She came along to row 6 in front of me and told the 3 pax that there upgrade was now thru and once in the air they could move to row 3. That is certainly LATE notification.

ODUs may be held back pending arrival of a deadheading crew, if they get delayed it may free up seats at the last minute for fare paying pax.

Hello, and thank you to all who replied. There remained no 'normal' upgrade seat on the QF webite, but I asked for an ODU and got it. Thank you for telling me that it does happen, and it did!
