I would tend to agree with you, but I wonder if people on this board will really accept limitations being imposed on them.

Eh? I'd respectfully say "too bad". Life imposes restrictions upon us all the time and cabin baggage limits are already a restriction imposed upon us.....which by buying the ticket, we've chosen to accept. The debate is not about the restriction, it's about the enforcement of the previously agreed limit!

I think most conventional hand luggage for the occupants of your row of seats can fit into the O/H locker above.

My claim is over that of my neighbour across the aisle who places their carry-on into the locker above your seat without first bothering to look in the locker above their seat. You know it is them when you board an only half full (at that stage) J cabin. From across the aisle is like being invaded by a foreign country.

As someone who sits in row 4 regularly. I believe that the small section under the seat in front of me is too small to fit my small bag without potentially damaging my laptop. Therefore both my bags go in the overhead.

However, a large bag can comfortably fit in front of the middle and window seats and I'm surprised by the number of people in those seats who cause maximum disruptions try to find space in overheads. Also especially amazed when they are last to board and there is an empty middle seat yet they never think to take the under seat space in front of the middle when someone clearly isn't sitting there.

Finally a question for the large item small item people. Qantas carry on allowance is 2 105cm bags on domestic. If someone did that, which is the large and which the small?

Had similar experience in USA a while back. As usual, I boarded early so my carry-one could go into a locker, which it did. I was in row 2.

At the very end of boarding two a**holes in Row 1 board (bulkhead seat), with much carry on. No seat in front, no room in overhead lockers. FA looks, but as usual bins are chokkers. I watched all this thinking: serves you right for boarding last with max carry-on. But was surprised for what happened next.

FA asked me if they could put the guy in front's carry on under his seat - ie in my legroom. I declined. FA asked again, asking me to co-operate. I explained that I had boarded early to ensure my stuff was in the overhead locker and didn;t want to be inconvenienced by some-one who didn't plan similarly.

FA asked again. I declined for a third time, looking them right in the eye. They went elsewhere. A**hole in front reclined the entire journey.

100% of the real estate defined by the metal hoop down there. Any feet from behind that extend beyond the hoop are fair game.

Love the way there's the inference by the FA that if you don't 'co-operate' ie decline to put the a**holes baggage under your seat then you're failing to comply with a crew members instruction. It seems to be that the F/A wanted to bully you into submission but failed.

If the row 1 occupants are last to board and as a result all overhead locker space in exhausted then their stuff should go in the hold. I was in an AC in MIA watching a 757 that was about to depart and the amount of times the cargo door had to be reopened for 'cabin baggage' was ridiculous. I noticed on US Airways yesterday that when they expect a full flight, they offer courtesy checking of carry on luggage, and quite a few people take up the offer. Then they have the FAs on board managing the overhead space and when it's full, any more large bags gets stopped at the door.

I would asked an FA to remove it.

This happens all too often when I fly AA. I politely as the crew if I can relocate it to the overhead, which is usually met with apologies and they ask the person in front to move it.

My theory is its a deliberate tactic to avoid paying for checked luggage. I've seen people board with bags that have no hope in hell of fitting in any locker at all, so clearly they will need to be gate-checked, and my assumption is the airline doesn't charge for gate-checked luggage.

I've seen people be made to pay to check bags at the gate, even leave them behind because they had too much "carry on".

If person in front of me stowed their stuff under their seat in front of mem, I would have taken the bag out from under the seat and gave it back to passenger and at the same time out me feet where it should go.

Is it "bullish" ignorance when you might not travel much, are told that your Life vest is under your seat, so you assume that this "space" is yours - especially in the bulkhead seats.

It's ok to assume the space is yours but when the FA asks you to move your bag up you don't argue, you do it!
I witnessed many cases of pax trying to "protect" their space while arguing with FAs during the process. It can be either about a small bag placed under the seat or a laptop in the front seat pocket. It's really annoying when some people think they know better and refuse to listen to simple instructions.

FA just gave away some authority and allowed a passenger to develop a bad habit. All you baby-boomer parents got a lot to answer for raising Gen-Y kids who now think they are special and have rights.

One of the last times I had a long haul in Y, I had my shoes off and under the seat in front during flight. The person in that seat kept taking them out from under the seat.

Where did they put them? And did the pax say anything to you?

I watched a woman argue with the QF crew when they wanted her to move her handbag off the vacant business class seat next to her for another passenger whose seat was not functioning properly. Yes she thought her handbag was entitled to a business class seat all the way from Los Angeles to Melbourne. No she had not paid for that seat as the dumbfounded crew members tried to explain to her. An extraordinary performance.
