My partner lives with her family in Perth, but tries to visit me in Brisbane as often as possible, basically here is her "second home".

A lot of our plans are now up in the air, but I want to understand that the actual process and solution would be to see each other again. I live alone, and have a work from home job, so she could come here and isolate with me. But when she returns to her family home, where she could self isolate for 2 weeks, I don't understand what exactly this would mean for her family. Would they too need to self isolate?

I need to understand what the actual written rules are on this. We are as close as family and this would be considered 'essential' travel - unless the ruling is that families are to keep away from each other.

Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere, I can't find it.

i understand the official advice is that travel is restricted to essential travel for medical or compassionate grounds.

Is your partner coming to QLD for medical reasons? No.

Is your partner travelling because one of her family needs caring, or is in hospital, or dying?

Unless one of those categories, travel is not essential.

what I'm chasing is the actual written rules. the state govt websites aren't as clear as I would expect

This might help? Its from the US Embassy sent today to US citizens in Australia.

  • · As of 1:30 pm WST on March 24, 2020, Western Australia will require all non-essential arrivals from interstate or overseas to quarantine for 14 days.
  • · As of 4:00 pm on March 24, 2020, the Northern Territory and the state of South Australia will require all non-essential arrivals from interstate or overseas to self-isolate for 14 days.
  • · As of midnight on March 20, 2020, the state of Tasmania has required all non-essential arrivals from interstate or overseas to quarantine for 14 days.
  • · Effective immediately, the states of New South Wales, Victoria, and the Australian Capital Territory require non-essential services to be suspended.

On March 19, the Prime Minister of Australia announced a travel ban on all non-residents and non-Australian citizens entering Australia in effect from 9:00 pm AEDT on Friday, March 20, 2020.

Given that you live alone and work from home, it might be easier for you to travel to Perth... Live in a Quest for 2 weeks and then you will both be in the same state with much easier arrangements to be together.

She would not be able to visit during those 2 weeks. It is self-isolation.

Queensland is now introducing the same measures as WA announced yesterday.

My partner lives 10km away, I am resigned to the fact it will be some time before we see each other face to face again. That is the reality of a pandemic when one of the people in the relationship (me) can not work remotely or practice self-isolation at the work place.

It appears the rules are to stay in doors in one place, don't venture into the outside world, for 14 days. But the restrictions don't apply to the people sharing a house with you during that time.

QLD have implemented the same measures today, so the isolation period would be mutual. This is not a good time to be in the process of moving house interstate!

The written rules are contained in directions/declarations/orders under the various jurisdiction's public health / emergency management legislation.

The are not always easy to locate and they do vary between jurisdictions. Details of the most recent declarations, with “lockdown” declarations highlighted, are included below

Queensland: Home Confinement Direction

New South Wales: all orders summarised here. Public Health (COVID-19 Restrictions on Gathering and Movement) Order 2020.

Australian Capital Territory: all declarations here.

Victoria: all declarations here. “Stay at Home” direction here. Summary here.

Tasmania: declarations here.

South Australia: emergency management declarations here.

Western Australia: all declarations here.

Hope that helps

I have to say that the new Tasmanian Premier has done all the right things.

All arrivals basically in isolation-even essential workers just being allowed to go to workplace.
