O'Farrell suggests Canberra airport as Sydney's second airport

Isn't the refinery at Kurnell closing?, if so new airport there, pay the local home owners market values and bingo:p

I thought that Kurnell was turning into a tank farm (?). Refining is finishing up. Import a finished product from Asia (cheaper).

I am against any refineries closing - Caltex @Kurnell and Shell @Clyde are on the chopping blocks (turning into tank farms - I could be wrong), Altona in Melbourne won't be too far away either. We need refineries for defence. At the moment Australia only has 3 weeks worth of diesel reserves, our defence force won't be doing too well with no fuel....and the 'enemy' won't help, will they...

.... Second, build a high speed railway Brisbane-Newcastle-Sydney-Canberra-Melbourne. This would relieve pressure off Sydney airport without the need to build a second airport. Road and Air travel can coexist.

Canberra is NOT an alternative airport for Sydney. In the same way Munich is not an alternative for Frankfurt, Houston is not an alternative for Dallas and Washington is not an alternative for New York.

And to the whingers who live near Sydney Airport. You knowlingly live near an airport so GROW UP AND DEAL WITH IT! <--- Acknowledged - too harsh, apologies

I still agree with you!

Good idea in theory but way too small a parcel of land for an airport capable of handling large RPT (unless you are including all the old sand hills area). It would also impact on the flight paths from/to SYD. It is also going to remain as a distribution facility as already mentioned.

Surprise surprise, a bright idea by a politician to solve Sydney's airport capacity problems runs into another dead end.

Agree with other post re: Canberra is not a viable option as a 'Sydney' airport.

For a city planned from scratched, it would be very stupid move if this housing development approval was to inhibits future expansion of Canberra airport in the future, whether it's for domestic of International flights.

As a final thought on this topic.

I'm of the the view that leaving SYD as a one-airport town only serves the rest of Australia's aviation in a positive way; so to summarise "I don't care. Keep just the one airport".

I'm of the view that Sydney only needs one airport. Just not the one it has got now.

Just imagine if we dropped something like Changi Airport (SIN) into a suitable location in SYD. We won't even be discussing about a 2nd airport here.
