Odessa???? [Tips on Getting there, safety, etc.]

Does anyone know anything about this part of the world - particularly in November? Is it safe to travel there by yourself? As a woman? Best way to get there from either Sydney or Perth?

Odessa is beautiful, but not sure what it's like in November. I went in June 2011 and loved it. Certainly felt safe. Mind you my wife speaks Russian so that made things much easier. It's quite a popular tourist destination in summer so you should feel quite safe. Not too many flights go there, you'll probably need to get to Moscow or Kiev first.

Mind you, I'd be recommending any single MEN to consider Odessa... For other reasons

Forgot to add... You'll need to get a visa if on an Australian passport. Can take 4-6 weeks I think? So you'll want to jump on this ASAP.

Odessa is beautiful.I walked around back streets by myself and felt safe but of course I am not a woman.We were there in July which was very hot.I did a trip report-

Quite easy to get there with Turkish Airlines. Otherwise more airlines fly into Kiev and you can get the train down from there.

odessa is the lovely place. lots of things to see, visit and buy. safe, but beware of gypsies. just look at different direction and avoid eye contact if you see them. they are so-called fortune-tellers but if fact just a skillful theives. a lot of pick-pocketing in crowded places. but you have to visit "7km" market, thats the name of it. great clothes and cheap. i grew up in the neighbouring town, so its easy for me there. you will be safe, just avoid gypsies. also avoid cheap eateries due to high chances of food being not fresh. visit opera theatre, the most beautiful opera theatre in europe. yes, turkish airlines is your best option to get there without stress. dont joke with local authorities. people in odessa has a great sence of humor, but not police and customs. have a lovely trip and enjoy hero- city odessa. you need a camera with big memory card to go there.
