I just remembered something from an SQ J leg I did MEL-SIN a few weeks ago (SQ218 - the overnight flight).
When I boarded the crew were fantastic as usual but I did notice 1 male crew member behaving unusually. I initially noticed him because he didn't look at all Singaporean (whereas SQ crew usually look quite similar). He was dressed in an SQ male crew suit.
He stood around in the galley while we boarded playing on his mobile phone, not looking at or talking to any passengers (or doing any work). After we took off he did a few minor crew member activities (such as closing curtains between classes). I went to the toilet to get changed for bed and saw him next to the toilet door again reading text messages on his phone. He looked up at me, said nothing, and then went back to reading text messages. I slept for most of the flight but when we landed he again did some very minor crew activities but did not speak to a single passenger at any stage nor serve any passengers (he didn't do much, he was just 'there'). As we disembarked we walked past him - he looked at us without saying a word. He didn't smile once.
I know he was not dead-heading as he was performing crew tasks and I never saw him sit in a passenger seat (and he was wearing a name tag). I found it most unusual that he would stand around in a J cabin in full uniform on his mobile phone ignoring J pax while all the crew around him did everything they could to make our flight as enjoyable as possible. He wasn't the J cabin manager (who worked tirelessly and interacted with pax just as you would expect him to). F was completely empty, but this man spent the flight hanging out in the J galleys.
Does anyone know who this person would have been and why they were acting this way? It didn't really bother me, they just stood out so much in comparison to the rest of the crew (who were perfect). Perhaps he was reviewing the J staff as some sort of internal inspector?
