I am travelling back to Aus next week QF LHR - SIN - MEL and I planning on carrying my motorbike helmet back with me. Now I am wondering how I should go about carrying it. Should I attempt to pack it in my suitcase Where I would be concerned that it could get damaged form crush or throwing around or should I carry it as hand baggage. On short haul's I have previously undertaken I have just done carry on with it and it fits easily into OH bins.
I just wondered what Your ideas and options could be.
Also other odd shaped items that ppl have carried that may not be quite large enough for checked baggage

I'd probably carry it on.

Another option if you're abole to increase your luggage allowance would be pack it into a box and check it in.

A friend of mine and his GF came to BNE form MEL for the weekend - they carried on their small wheelies with enough clothes and checked in a pair of alloy wheels (!) - 1pc each, each <23kg (just), all boxed up and padded with bubble/newspaper. Worked well, no hassles from QF, goods arrived in one piece.

So that might be an option.

I would say carry on

my understanding is a helmet is designed to protect you - once and once only (has to do with the compression of the polystyrene). So if its dropped/damaged it will affect its ability to protect your noggin at a later date

so if you carry it on at least you will know if it gets damaged

thats why second hand helmets always make me cringe, you just don't want to compromise with that sort of thing especially if you took a spill at speed (not that I would wish you too!)

you only get one head :)

I have done it. That is, carry on a helmet. But it would have been about 1984 and I think the carry on rules might have been a bit more liberal. No one asked any questions as it was pretty obvious what it was. Oh yes I did not try to wear it.

Wandering differently these days.....

Look, in reality, if you are concerned, simply carry it on.

you should be fine ...

Yeah figured as much. Used to do that for domestic flights just wondering about long haul. I am leaving Uk permanently so this is gonna be a big pack I am expecting a charge. I just wanted to make sure helmet is ok. I will just carry it on.
cheers folks
