Langham Hospitality Group acquires Observatory Hotel | Hospitality Magazine

The Langham Hospitality Group has entered the Sydney market, acquiring the luxurious Observatory Hotel.

Located near the Rocks, the hotel, which will become part of the group on 8 August 2012, is close to the Harbour Bridge and Opera House, and according to CEO of Langham Hospitality Group, Brett Butcher, the venue suits the brand well.

"Strategically, this purchase signals the group's plans for long-term expansion in the Pacific region.

Makes sense. Lovely old-world luxury hotel in a fantastic location has Langham written all over it. I wonder if they'll turn that lovely basement day spa into a Chuan Spa.

Interesting that the two local Langham properties are takeovers - Sheraton in Melbourne and Observatory in Sydney. A shame they haven't found any new space for a trendy Langham Place property.

I've just spent 2 nights here with Mrs_Orange and I have to say it was fantastic. It's a beautiful hotel and the service put many other 5* hotels to shame. The breakfast and degustation menu we had were really good and the location is superb too.

How would u compare it to the Observatory?
I stayed there a few years ago and it felt a bit dated. I wonder if they renovated the place when they changed ownership.
Does Galileo restaurant still exists?
I remember the food there was excellent.

I can't comment on its former life as this was my first stay at the property. Galileo is still there and as I mentioned the food was excellent. I suppose some people may say that it feels dated, but to me it was just a certain style, which I happen to like. That said everything worked, the bed was comfortable and nothing about the place felt old or worn out. The only exception were the rather wobbly paving stones on our balcony.

I stayed at the Langham Sydney for the first time the other week, and based on that stay, I stayed at the Langham Melbourne last week (usually stay at Crown), and found both Langham properties excellent. Sydney does not feel outdated, and the staff are excellent.

We had booked another weekend here in September but have just been called by the hotel to say that they are closing for refurbishment from the start of July to the end of November so they have cancelled our booking which is very disappointing. They have offered assistance in finding an alternative. We were thinking about the Shangri-La, having enjoyed the Tokyo property. Is the Sydney property worth the stay?

The refurbished club rooms are very nice, with great views. I can't say a bad word about this property.

In the end, we decided to reschedule our trip to next year, luckily I could change our JASA. We are now looking forward to seeing the refurbed Langham. Will report back post-stay if nobody else visits first.

I walk past it a couple of days a week to the office, can report building work is well under way.
