Always good to see safety procedures work properly.

An Air New Zealand A320 made an emergency landing at Melbourne Airport about 8pm Thursday night after reports of engine trouble and leaking fuel.

Auckland-bound Flight Z726 issued a mayday call soon after taking off at 7.48pm.

====

Melbourne Airport spokeswoman Anna Gillett said the A320 landed safely and without reported injury.

Good result, one airframe and all pax intact.

The Age quotes a pax, quoting the pilot's PA saying an engine failure... that's why most Regular Passenger Transport aircraft have more than one and are quite capable of flying and landing safely with just one. Lucky that it happened close to an airport, easier on all involved, rather than midway over the Tasman.

Also, I suspect that the pilots were furiously doing their landing weight calcs if this flight was trans-Tasman bound and only made it a few miles from Tulla before turning back full(~ish) of fuel.
