The prime minister has confirmed that the New Zealand border will be closed to anyone who is not a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident from 11.59pm tonight. (19/3)
Edit: From Radio NZ, but the link isn't working.

Those on QR920 and various inbound flights from the Americas that took off pre-announcement are in for a nervous flight I suppose...

I think it was mentioned Australians were exempt in NZ, and vice versa.

Does this affect transit pax?

We have a US citizen leaving MEL for the states via AKL on Air New Zealand on Friday. Is she about to become an unintentional Kiwi or will they allow the transit?

I cannot find it explained adequately anywhere.

Official websites are a good place.

  • Up until 23:59 (New Zealand time) on Sunday 29 March 2020 nationals of the United States and Canada can transit via New Zealand from Australia on flights to the United States and Canada (respectively)
  • Up until 23:59 (New Zealand time) on Sunday 29 March 2020 people travelling from the Pacific who do not need to transit through Australia can transit via New Zealand to their home countries.

I had trawled through Air NZ and NZ Gov't sites without success which is why I was asking for help.

Thanks for the information. Where and when was it published so I/we can watch for changes?

Edit: Found it thanks.
