Hi guys,

I'm thinking of heading to Connecticut in May (to attend a concert which starts at 8pm) and I'll be originating from NYC.

It is a good 100miles away, so what's the best way to get there, taking into cost/time considerations? Should I go via coach or fly there?

Thanks :)

Alan

If you have to go back to NYC a rental car would be a good option.

I once used a "limo" service from LGA to Stamford, CT. It was more like a minibus than a limo. Was the type that do shared pickup at an airport and drop-off at hotels. It was quite some time ago, and before I was confident driving in the USA. So I used the "limo" to Stamford and then picked up a rental car there, rather than battle my way through and out of NYC.

Also consider Amtrak. They have several services that run north from NY.

At least you have the option of coming and going when you want rather than being dictated to by a schedule.

If you manage to get out of the city at a good time and have a clear run on to the I95 it shouldnt take more than 1.5hr's, 2 hr's at worst

Very true, now I need to buy two tickets to Britney's concert ;)

depends on exactly where in CT you are going.Sorry I have no idea where Britneys concert is!Metro North is quite a decent service from Grand Central as long as the place is on that line.
However I would also go for the rental car. When driving to or from north east CT we use route 15 rather than I95-it is cars only and much more scenic.Called the merrit parkway in CT and the Hutchinson river parkway in NY state.

The concert will be held at UNCASVILLE, CT - Mohegan Sun Arena.

I'm just grabbing it off THE CIRCUS STARRING BRITNEY SPEARS 2009 TOUR INFORMATION

If I hire the car, yes will use a GPS.

Problem is google maps and GPS dont give you the nicest way to drive.I would not consider I95 through CT a nice drive.
Seeing it is that far you could overnight at the new HGI at Groton-probably only about 10K from the concert. It is close to the submarine base and museum where tours are free.If you are into boats also not far from Mystic Seaport but that costs and takes up more time.
Plenty of boutique hotels and B&Bs near the coast there as well.

I've done a fair bit of driving round that area and NYC isn't that scary. Sydney or Melbourne can be just as bad. In fact I prefer driving in NYC as people expect you to merge etc. Sydney and Melbourne drivers get cranky when the lane ends and you get infront of them.

Just note that trying to get north of Manhattan in traffic can take a while. Just leave about 1pm and enjoy a slow, but scenic drive. Note that you will need tolls for some points and make sure you review the road update before you travel. New York Traffic Report | Traffic Information | Road Conditions NY:: Traffic.com

I agree with sr81 - driving in NYC isn't that scary, especially compared to the likes of Cairo or Manila.

And yes, I'd drive up to CT. Or you get a car service to drive you, but that's less economical.

Most of the time I have no problems with cars wanting to merge in front of me. I only get cranky when the person behind me or 10 cars back in the same lane as me sneaks into the kerb lane to try and get in front of me or other cars when the traffic in front has stopped. Very neat trick if you want to irritate other drivers on the road. :-|

This is where the US is way ahead of Australia.Where 2 lanes merge into 1 in the US the slow driver will be in the inside lane and if he sees you going faster in the outside lane he will slow further to let you get ahead.
Meanwhile back in australia the slow driver will be in the outside lane and speed up if he sees you coming only to go even slower when you are behind in the 1 lane section.
