Has anyone ever sub letted an apartment in NYC instead of staying in a hotel. Looking to stay 10+ days and would be interested if anyone could point me to some decent listing sites. I note that the ones I have found all require payment before you can contact the lister which is stupid in my view.

I'm in the same boat and found the following quote in travel magazine "Paperplane" (which I'd never seen before, but after reading in the QP, I thoroughly enjoyed):

A virtual bulletin board, newyork.craigslist.org is the most oft-used website for New Yorkers wishing to sublet their apartments.
It mentions upwards of US$500 for a single week.

I haven't checked it out yet (not going to NY until Sept), but I'm keen to hear how you go with your search. :)

Cheers,
- Febs.

No worries. I found craigslist to be a bit of a dogs breakfast to navigate but will let you know how I get on.

I haven't had experience of this, but have often seen comments on the thorntree.lonelyplanet.com forum that the craigslist sub-let may sometimes not be permitted by the terms of the lease so it could get messy.

Be VERY,VERY careful.NYC real estate laws are so different to Australia and legal short term apartment rentals are few and far between. My son owns an apartment in Manhattan and basically is not allowed to rent it out.
A lot of newer apartments are condominiums and so a bit more flexible. However my sons in laws own a condominium in NYC that we stay at at times. To do so we have to be approved by the board and submit photos before staying.
Go for the apartment hotels such as Affinia or Radio city apartments.Oakwood apartments could be tried but usually for a month or more.
Dont be fooled by someone saying that they have stayed at apartment X or Y.That doesnt mean it is legal and if you are the bunny who is caught you can end up on the street sans money.A lot of apartment rentals in NYC are also out and out scams.

Sorry to hijak, but I am wondering similar in terms of serviced apartments. Does the US have anything similar to say Quest or Meriton which let out 2br serviced apartments? In the past I have stayed in the ClubQuarters but they are booked out for Dec08 already.

The Affinia group is similiar to quest and have 2 and 3 bedroom apartments in their hotels. Our extended family stayed in a 3 bedroom apt in affinia gardens last december-but we did book 11.5 months out.New York & Chicago Hotels - New York City Hotel Rooms - Affinia NYC & Chicago Hotels
Oakwood would be similiar to Meriton.I have not used them but apparently are legit and operate in several countries.Temporary Furnished Apartments, Corporate Apartments, Serviced Apartments and Extended Stay Housing
