NRMA no longer accepts AMEX cards

When I called to change my policy to my MC, I questioned why NRMA had decided to stop accepting American Express. The operator said "because they charge their customers so high fees and we wouldn't want our customers paying them!"

I wonder who fed her that one.

I just cancelled both our policies with NRMA and started new ones with GIO.

The exact same coverage but cheaper. $3 fee for by the month payment which is fine by me.

When I called to cancel the guy asked:
"Can I ask why you are cancelling your policies?"
Me: "You have ceased accepting American Express as a form of payment"
Him: "You don't have other forms of payment?"

What I wanted to say: "Other forms? Wow, I thought you guys had stopped accepting all forms of payment.."

what I did say : "Yes, I choose not to use them".

Give GIO a call - the quote was less than the NRMA for the same coverage.

That's right Mish - they were significantly cheaper for our quote, I couldn't beleive how much money I had wasted on NRMA.

When I cancelled our policies, I was asked why I was doing so, and I said "I could tell you, but you wouldn't like it". The response was "O - KAAAY". Perhaps I should have let them have it with both barrells - afterall they have stuck it to the poor consumer for a while.

I would be interested to know the covers involved-exact same coverage would seem to be unusual :?:

I got the PDS from 4 companies I contacted and compared it to the NRMA. The GIO was, IMO, more explicit about what it covered / did not cover as were the other PDS I looked at. From that I went back and asked specific questions about issues I wanted covered that absolutely were not covered with NRMA even tho' I thought they were, and I narrowed it down from there.

That's how I know I got better coverage and how the price compared.

Just out of interest how do GIO compare to insurers who *don't* take Amex? Has anybody tried?

For me, getting the cover I wanted was more important that whether or not an insurance company took AMEX. If they did, then great, if not, then MC would do fine.
