Yes, this is the one big let down of VFF. I remember looking like a fool trying to argue my way into the star alliance lounge in Istanbul when coming back on an SQ flight. Live and learn.

To clarify: since the original post, the lounge access position on this route has improved. There is now access to good/excellent lounges prior to all four departures (in addition to access to the VS LHR arrivals lounge for VA WP).

Quick question for anyone that's flown this route... is it possible to select a seat on the VS flight between HKG and LHR (booked as a VA codeshare) before online check-in opens?

It sure is, Download the VS ap ( looks exactly like the DL version )
You can also see your $$ options to upgrade

Is this the same in the opposite scenario - if flying VA metal as a VS code share (with a VS flight number) is seat selection possible online for the VA flight?

One day I might end up booking BNE-LAX-LHR with VA and VS respectively but it's always cheaper to book it through VS with VS flight numbers rather than VA.

Im not 100% entirely sure, havent done it that way. Ive had a great travel agent always book me the RTW special, BNE-SYD-HKG-LHR-LAX-BNE, did it last year, and am doing it again in 3 weeks time.
I pay the extra $160 ( i think) for exit row on the VS flights.

I almost booked this late this year, though decised against doing it incase the SYD - HKG route gets dropped.
So I just booked a return flight to the UK and a side trip from the US and back to the UK.

I wouldnt let that stop you, gotta live on the edge. Would be interesting what VA would do in that case.

I did this too, not for worrying about the HKG route, but because I only wanted to visit the East coast of the USA. AFAIK the fare is locked in to AU-HKG-LHR-LAX-AU?

Just a reminder: beware long layover times in HK on this route and take advantage of the arrivals lounge in LHR if you’re VA Plat!
