Non-revenue - someone, typically airline staff, who flys either for nix, or at a significant discount because they are staff.

Just out of interest how many non-revs would they fly between say SYD - LAX which would be scheduled? (I could understand unscheduled in the event of equipment failures)

I can certainly understand a few non-revs between SYD-MEL a week mainly positioning International A/C, but I can't understand why they wouldn't want to fill a plane with pax if it's going to be flying for 13+ hours....

I think your referring to "deadheading" or "paxing" which is when staff - generally cabin crew or pilots fly as passengers in order to meet their next flight.
At Qantas this is called duty travel and anyone on duty travel will always come before non-rev travel and sometimes even before commercial passengers

"Non-Rev" or "Staff Travel" is travel at little cost for the purpose of holiday, free time, for crew who commute etc.

Tomorrow for example there are 13 passengers on QF107 and 6 on QF11 who are entitled to staff travel on Qantas. They could be Qantas employees, family, friends, or other airline employees.

It sounds like someone can be rostered to work SYD-LAX and then deadhead back from LAX to their next scheduled flight?
 
Yes they could. But patterns like that are usually created because of illness, upline disruptions etc and are given to people on reserve because the pattern is created last minute.

The volcano saga a month back had a lot of crew paxing to and from Singapore

That makes a little more sense... For some reason I was thinking of non revenue flights (eg moving empty equipment) rather than simply non revenue seats.
 
We refer to those as "ferry flights" - flights without passengers. In fact just a few days ago the A380 QF32 from SIN to SYD was ferried.

The A380 also regularly ferries between Sydney and Melbourne.

I've done a few luckily and they are great but a bit creepy as well. A whole A380 to yourself.... bit scary when a call bell goes off!
