I think the best advice is try some out in store(s) and to be clear what you want them for. If the flights you mention are the only long-haul you'll be doing then I wouldn't think headphones just for that are essential. The QF supplied ones are OK.

I travel a fair bit and usually listen to music so I do have my own set - but don't always bother using. I wanted a set which would cancel noise and be good for listening to music anywhere. I tried a few in store and settled on Panasonic RP HC800s. Got for about $140 a year ago. Very good noise-cancelling, good battery life, works without noise-cancelling on, comfortable (very important - hence the need to try!), convenient travel case etc.

The latest Bose and Sennheisers I tried did have a better sound, but not enough to justify an extra $200 at the time. I also didn't want anything too expensive which may get damaged or left on a plane etc.

So this works for me but everyone is different. But there's no doubt when I was looking the Bose sets seemed to be the most popular and well regarded choice.

2: If travelling to the US, if the exchange rate is decent, the bose outlets sell them at significant discounts at your local outlet mall with the same warranty. Then stack your TRS on top of that for extra cashback.

Hmmm, I don't think so. You do realise that TRS is a refund of GST you have paid in Australia for goods exported, so you are not going to get anything "extra cashback" for anything you are purchasing in the LOTFAP.

My mistake, called it the wrong thing. I'm referring to refund of state-collected taxes. I collected them in texas, didn't realise it only applied to texas and louisiana.

Don't know if they have them available easily down there, but if you can buy replacement foam earbud tips for a pair of earbuds, they work very well at blocking noise.

That's pretty much what I use, I bought a set of Etymotic Research MC5 and they came with the foam earbud and silicone type, as I worked in a noisy workshop I was looking for a good quality, cheapish set with excellent passive noise reduction. I have also used them on several flights and they work a treat, the foam ends lasted about a year and have since bought more replacement foam ends, although I have just lost the headphones after over four years of use, and I will be buying another set soon.

I have my own noise cancelling headphones, but if flying J and you need to buy a pair I wouldn't bother. The fact you don't have a pair now suggests you haven't been that fussed so far so perhaps not worth the spend. It's like is a BMW better than the Toyota, for the guy who only needs a Toyota a BMW isn't better.

Horses for courses.

As an aside, last year I was on QF93 in row 12. Watching movies the system kept rebooting on me at odd intervals, maybe 5 minutes maybe 25. I soon worked out it was happing when I moved significantly - so I suspected the headphones as being the only part of the IFE that would be physically affected by my moving. I obtained a different pair of the QF standard3 prong, but the same thing kept happing.

I then tried my own battery powered (two prong) ones - problem solved.

Suspect that the power prong wiring in the socket may have been shorting.

The cabin was full, so without my own 'phones I would have been SOL.
