there are too many Platinums - pushing Platinum qualification up is the way to go.

Which means more people may leak to VA and various international carriers, which doesn't help the airline.

Although the did recently push it up a little for retaining platinum (vs attaining), so maybe that will work.

The loyalty machine is not designed for the benefit of passengers, it is carefully lubricated to provide enough benefit to enough people enough of the time, with a bit of tension built in, to maintain a strong share of people's travel wallets, and extract a few more dollars than otherwise be the case - be they company, personal or mixture of both. Until such time that there is significant leakage to other carriers because of things like overcrowding, then I wouldn't expect increasing the platinum qualification (any more than they already did this year), is going to happen.

I am booked on the following 8 flights in the next 6 months. If any AFF member (or family) booked on one of these flights……..

So if none of the Platinums here actually fly JQ, extrapolating then this seemingly won't have any impact on the First lounge.

I would have thought a bigger impact at SYD will be the likely move of the medium haul narrow bodies (NZ, Pacific and possibly Indonesia on XLRs) to the proposed T2/T3 connector at SYD.

I have only once deliberately booked a JQ MEL-SYD flight that was a domestic leg of an intl flight to SGN and left from the internatonal terminal.
There were at least 10 Platinums in the F lounge that were on that flight and all had the D sticker on the boarding pass so it does get used.

Rather average when JQ is the only option. I’ve got one JQ booked on the basis that I could use the QF lounge. Would have been much better to say make the change with a years notice not just ~3.5 months but such is life.

Excellent point about the year's notice and I think they should give a year's notice (or a little more) of all changes to the conditions, because the advertised benefits would often be one of the reasons for going all out to retain or gain status over one's membership year. I remember feeling quite annoyed that a few months into my membership year a few years ago, the ability to take my non-flying partner into the lounge was taken away only about 3 months after I had earned it, and that was an important benefit for me! (It was described by Qantas as a 'simplification'.

This afternoon JQ has changed prices for J on the AUST-BKK routes.
From BNE the max bundle is $200.
From SYD $280.
From MEL-$300
Hmmm.

Even with extortionate airport prices those amounts will get an adequate food and wine or beers.

So I have not discounted flying JQ J to BKK. The day time flights are not a problem in recliners.
Flying from BNE with JQ is $1250 cheaper for each of us the TG from SYD. Plus no need for a connecting flight. Looks like we will still go JQ unless there are awards available.

PS. JQ still saying lounge access included for an August flight.

Id think that's unusual (as are those flights, typically once a week only on some months a year).
From what I can tell there are only a handful of SYD-MEL and vv before this change kicks in.

Obviously a lot more regularly scheduled JQ flights.

Also with the discontinuation of JQ Economy Max some time ago also means you can't get lounge access included on JQ narrowbodies (until their 321XLRs arrive from 2028)

In the coming months, QF is running far more D using I flights from SYD with both QF5 and QF33.

I actually think the changes QF are rolling out are pretty reasonable, although I do concede that in the last couple of weeks it may have felt like death by a thousand cuts. Relatively modest changes to status earning and some additional restrictions on lounge passes and access for passengers travelling on JQ? Given the choice, I prefer QF's approach to what BA has done, or moving to a revenue-based program like the US majors and SQ have done. I have to spend $50k+ SGD a year to keep SQ Solitaire to get the benefit of lounge access when flying Scoot (which I generally don't do). This is a better deal than that.

We don't really want to end up with the vast overcrowding that US airlines now face (although for slightly different reasons) so I'm in favour of teetering around the edges to keep things sustainable. I'm sure I'm far too optimistic hoping for enhancements to the undrinkable wine and underwhelming food...

At some point QF has to segment and I do think we need to be logical in accepting 3 hours in the F lounge on a $200 JQ ticket was probably a tad too lenient and probably costs we passengers in other ways.

Often those flights are charged at a premium also. I’ve seen some flights nearly double to triple compared to buying off JQ directly. Another thing the ACCC needs to pick up.

My data point, as SG in 2022, flew JQ J MEL-DPS-MEL Lounge access in Melbourne all good and able to guest Flyfrequently offspring.

.... all classic rewards book as JQ - meaning that no lounge access whether it is Y or J on Jetstar when booking an international classic reward.

Looking further at JQ BNE- BKK in late September as we want to cut a month off our August trip. However that is school holiday time..So from BNE to BKK the max bundle only includes lounge access on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday..
Looks like people like the bundle as the J fare on lounge days in school holidays is ~ $2-4K higher than on no lounge days.
